Green Energy Institute (GEI) conference Tomorrow's Energy System brings various perspectives to the energy transition

The Green Energy Institute at Lewis & Clark Law School (GEI), led by Professor Melissa Powers, brought together an engaging group of experts this spring to discuss the options for a rapid transition to a renewable energy system. “We have to recognize that the incumbency dynamic associated with our existing resources and economy will require us to be far more strategic, far more generous, far more creative than even the moonshot required,” Professor Powers said in her opening remarks. The full-day conference featured elected officials, renewable energy and utility executives, regulators, and advocacy leaders who discussed the barriers to ambitious climate change mitigation and ways to overcome them.

Influential legal opinion published by the International Environmental Law Project could lead to the end of Japan's high-seas sei whaling
|

Professor Erica Lyman of Lewis & Clark's International Environmental Law Project (IELP) is the lead author of an influential legal opinion which explains how Japan’s sei whaling practices violate the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). In its legal brief, IELP argued that the “overwhelming majority” of each sei whale killed for scientific purposes is actually processed for commercial sale. IELP’s legal opinion offered “a fresh perspective” on a long-contentious issue, said Matt Collis, the London-based policy director for the International Fund for Animal Welfare. “It is notable that the Standing Committee decision and the Secretariat’s lines of argument and recommendations seemed to largely correspond to the rationale and approach in the IELP opinion. I think that demonstrates the importance and influence of IELP’s work.” Read the full story by Dan Sadowsky

The online LLM in Environmental, Natural Resources, and Energy Law builds on the law school’s internationally recognized post-JD environmental law Master’s program, and is specifically designed for attorneys who want to more effectively practice environmental law. Applications for the Fall 2019 Cohort are now being accepted.

Professor Lisa Benjamin, the newest faculty member of Lewis & Clark Law School’s Environmental, Natural Resources, and Energy Law Program, has been appointed to be a member of the Compliance Committee of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), for a three-year term from 2019-2021.
A globally recognized expert and scholar in energy, climate change, corporate law, and the intersections between them, Professor Benjamin was nominated by the Latin American and Caribbean region at the Conference of the Parties meeting in December 2018.
 Jillian Hishaw, agricultural attorney, founder of F.A.R.M.S., and author of Don't Bet the Farm on Medicaid spoke to a large crowd of law students regarding "A Perspective from a Lawyer of Color on Diversity within the field of Agriculture" on February 7, 2019. Ms. Hishaw discussed marginalization of people of color communities in the agriculture and natural resources sector despite the growing demographic of people of color and women shaping the US food and agricultural systems. She also spoke on her experience working in agriculture before she established her businesses out of necessity.

Hannah Clements, 2L, named Wyss Scholar Lewis & Clark Law School is pleased to announce that Hannah Clements ’20 is the second Wyss Scholar to be selected from the law school. As a Wyss Scholar, Hannah will receive a stipend for a summer position after 2L year with a nonprofit or public sector conservation organization dedicated to the Intermountain West, membership in the Wyss Scholars network, generous tuition assistance for her 3L year, the ability to apply for a Wyss Scholars’ Small Grants Program to propose professional development events, and two post-graduation payments upon entering in a qualified career position.
