Reaching young people for the Lord Jesus Christ, strengthening families,
and serving local churches.

Greetings!

These last few weeks have been a whirlwind, especially for Mike. He’s taken trips to San Francisco, Pacifica, Yuba City, Sonora, and Wilton (with plans to travel to Pensacola at the end of the month) for camp responsibilities. These trips have included pastor meetings, camp Sundays, and recruiting, as well as a new responsibility this year—science camp promotion. In addition, we’ve had two science camps, three adult retreats, and a quick “stay-cation”, where we started training Drake in the ways of the porcelain throne (such “fun” and an unexpected, last-minute twist to our vacation--and why it became a stay-cation!)

CORE camp
Science camps (our CORE camps) are a rare time of year when we get to minister to private schools in a way that go well beyond the spiritual emphasis, activity-rich camps we typically run. Science camps are a time almost completely dedicated to teaching science from a Creationist, design-focused platform (which is right in Mike’s wheel-house!) to students in 5 through 7 grade. Our science camps run for either three or four school days, depending on what the group contracts for.

Day one begins with studies about the world around us and about how observation helps us to understand everything we see and can help us figure out how things work. The students then dig into reptiles and amphibians. That evening, they attend a chapel session where one of the staff men preaches from the Bible. The night finishes with either an evening activity or class.

Days two and three see the students in Design Class each morning, where Mike typically starts by showing how inconceivable it is to assume that the detail and precision of the universe happened by chance. One statistic mentioned in Lee Strobel’s book The Case for the Creator cites that the chances of one specific constant being the way it is by chance would be like throwing a dart from space and hitting a target the size of an atom—inconceivably impossible without outside help. Some of the other classes the students get to participate in include mammals, horse science, codes, fire building and water purification, and ornithology. Again, in the evenings, they attend a chapel session and an evening activity or class.

The night activities, spread out between the evenings and the number of student groups, include rock climbing, a camp fire, and an evening class. The evening class is about stars, in which the students get to learn about the clockwork organization of the night sky, as well as how to identify various constellations around the “Winter Hexagon.”

The final day of camp begins with Design Class again. Then, after a quick morning activity, the students are challenged with a fun science "quiz" before they eat lunch and leave.

Our family
Mike started on a seminary degree again. He got his first Masters in Biblical Exposition back around 2010 and has since been itching to start another degree. He was recently accepted at BIOLA university and has begun a new Masters’ Degree in Apologetics. He’s taken one class so far and got an A! As money and time permit, Lord-willing, he’ll piece together the rest of the degree over the next several years, with hopes someday of earning a doctorate.

As for the boys, Drake and Jed are growing and developing well. Just in the past week, both boys have become more vocal—Drake with an increased vocabulary, short sentences, conversational “ya” responses, and much repeating of words that we say, and Jed with a lot of “ge ge” and “da da” and other such sounds.

Jed had his 6-month well-check appointment. He’s currently 40th percentile for weight at just under 17 pounds and 67th percentile for height at just over 27 inches. Drake is growing and getting heavier as well, but we won’t know where he lands on the charts till his appointment in June.

It’s fun to see the boys interact. Jed seems to just love his brother. And Drake enjoys saying hi to Jed, giving him his pacifier or some toy, playing in Jed’s crib, or just this morning, helping to feed him. And he gets upset if Jed is really upset. However, Drake is not so keen on Jed the times that Jed is in Deb's lap when he (Drake) wants to be.

Deb keeps busy with work in the mornings and with the boys and whatnot the rest of the time. There's not much new or different happening in her life currently, which is probably a good thing, all things considered!

As a final note, we’ll be heading back east in September and October for a Missions’ Conference. Pray the conference goes well and that we present our ministry wisely. California is a unique mission field that’s easy to either overlook, avoid, or mock. Pray for clarity and wisdom as we present our ministry and, more importantly, the need for Christians to come and serve here in this far corner of our country.
Prayer Requests
  • for Mike as he decides about continuing a degree or not.
  • for wise and balanced raising of the boys.
  • for our summer staff needs. We still have several positions open.
  • for wisdom for Mike as he plans summer camp. He has a lot of moving parts to figure out as he and others try to weave the spiritual and program themes together to make summer fun yet spiritually impactful.
  • for safety and ease traveling east when the time comes for us to participate in a Mission’s Conference there.
