#3LV CAREER HACKS FOR HUMP DAY

April 3, 2019

"As a general rule, adults are much more likely

to act their way into a new way of thinking

than to think their way into a new way of acting.

From Surfing the Edge of Chaos: The Laws of Nature and the New Laws of Business.

Mujeres y Allies,

Have you ever found yourself saying, “Someday I’ll be financially secure or Someday I’ll have a great career. Someday I’ll be in a great relationship?” There are times in life when this kind of statement makes perfect sense.  Someday I’ll be done with law school and I’ll be working at a great law firm. Someday I’ll be finished with my tour of duty and join civilian life. Most goals in life require finishing key steps. But there are many times that Someday is a way to play it safe, postpone a big decision, or just keep to a comfortable routine.  What are you waiting for? It’s normal to be unsure or downright scared about taking a big step forward in life.

This week’s #3LVCareerHacks is dedicated to building the courage to act, taking an educated risk and making your plans come to life!

Uno, dos, y tres. Let’s do this con ganas!

Tip #1  Courage isn’t a State of Mind

Emotional health involves recognizing a feeling or reaction that helps us reflect on what are the circumstances or situations that can make us happy, fulfilled, and satisfied.  We also benefit by paying attention to what makes us fearful and anxious because our flight or fight response is about survival. But if we live governed by an emotion, there's another risk.  An emotion can stop us from acting for our long term best interests. Even when you feel like sitting still in the face of a challenge, one step in the right direction is an act of courage. Doing something even in the face of fear is how you build courage and how we live our fullest life.

Tip #2  Build Your Action Muscle

Every big decision in life requires some measure of reflection, analysis and yes, strategy.  Most of what makes our lives meaningful requires taking action, however. It takes courage to confess your feelings for someone, to accept a job away from home or to take a project that stretches your professional life. If you find yourself spending a lot of time in reflection, seeking other’s advice or just writing about it in a journal, this may be a sign your action muscle needs a workout. Make a commitment to yourself to break down a big decision into steps and commit to one step each day or each week to make it come true.

Tip #3  Measure Success with an Accountability Partner

Sometimes it helps to build our courage by having others who will check up on us.  We can use accountability partners--trusted advisors or colleagues--that we talk to regularly about our process on a project or a journey we have set for ourselves. Accountability partners need to be those we will truly listen to and want to align on expectations and it’s best if you can reciprocate and help them stay on track with their own work. Meet regularly and be honest on your progress. Celebrate the small and big wins together!

That’s it. #3LVCareerHacks on building the courage to act on your goals, ambitions and dreams for your work and life.
