Town to seek feedback from residents on proposed regulations to Smoking By-law 
The Town will be updating its Smoking By-law and will seek feedback from residents on proposed regulations related to smoking and vaping tobacco and cannabis in public spaces. Residents will have the opportunity to learn more and provide their feedback at the Town’s upcoming Community Open House TODAY at the Municipal Offices (395 Mulock Drive) from 4 to 8 p.m. For those unable to attend the Community Open House, the survey is also available online at newmarket.ca until April 30. Residents may also be contacted by the Town via telephone as well to provide their feedback . Residents are encouraged to Get Involved and give their feedback on specific questions related to the proposed regulations to help inform Council’s decision. Town’s annual water quality report
The Town’s 2018 Water Quality Report was presented to Council at the March 18 Committee of the Whole Meeting and is now available online. The Annual Water Quality Summary Report provides information on how the Town continues to ensure the ongoing delivery of safe drinking water to residents of the Town of Newmarket in compliance with the Ontario Safe Drinking Water Act. Hardcopies of the report are available at the Robert N. Shelton Operations Centre (1275 Maple Hill Court) and the Municipal Offices (395 Mulock Drive). Newmarket Annual High School Art Contest
When: Now until Friday, April 26

Now in its 14th year, this student art exhibition features creativity and talents from local high schools. All are welcome to drop-in and see the artworks on display in the halls of the Municipal Offices, Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. – except holidays . The Mindful Project Mental Health: Roots|Routes
When: Exhibit - April 5 to May 25, Public Reception - April 13 from 4 to 6:30 p.m.
Where: Newmarket Old Town Hall, Serpa Galleries (460 Botsford Street)
The Town of Newmarket in partnership with The Mindful Project presents themes of the artists past, lived experiences, upbringing, traditions and their choices, life path, journey, triumphs and tribulations. This group art exhibit aims to spark positive conversations and ignite change in social attitudes. Through these featured works, artists and makers express their roots or routes in relation to mental health. In our community gallery, Ocutherapy will offer virtual reality demonstrations to show how technology can help patients with brain injuries rehabilitate and recover.

During the public reception on April 13, all are welcome to view, explore and engage in Mental Health and Wellness. View the Roots|Routes group art currently on display; listen to speakers from the Canadian Mental Health Association York Region and South Simcoe, and personal stories from special guest(s) about their journeys. Creating your Personal Mandala of Possibilities Workshop
When: Saturday, April 6 from 1 to 3:30 p.m.
Where: Newmarket Old Town Hall, Serpa Galleries (460 Botsford Street)
This free workshop will guide participants through a series of writing prompts and creative art making to explore the notion of wholeness and mindfulness. Using the form of the mandala, participants will draw and collage to express their thoughts, feelings and ideas as they delve into their boundless potential as creative beings. No art or writing experiences required, just an open spirit and sense of adventure to create in a safe and supportive environment. Participants will receive a resource package and all materials will be provided. Register at play.newmarket.ca using course code 121942. Space is limited. Artists Angelika Aitken and Clare Bolton will facilitate this workshop.

Live Music Pub Night with Wreckroom Elvis
When: Saturday, April 6 from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m.
Where: Newmarket Seniors' Meeting Place (474 Davis Drive)
Come out for a fantastic night of live entertainment, featuring local well known bands. Tickets include Meal, Tea and Coffee, and Evening Treats. A great night of music for those aged 50+. Medieval Times & Cheese Boutique
When: Wednesday, April 10 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Where: Medieval Times
Travel through the mists of time to a forgotten age and a tale of devotion, courage and love. Get into the spirit and celebrate medieval dining by eating with your hands during a delicious medieval lunch. See an electrifying show featuring heroic knights on spirited horses displaying the astounding athletic feats and thrilling swordplay. Next, we stop at a delicious gourmet cheese emporium. Fill your basket with fresh fruits, vegetables, hand crafted butchery, high-quality seafood and of course...cheese. Cost is $89 for members and $94 for non-members. Cost includes lunch, ticket to show, shopping stop, and luxury motor coach transportation.

There are two pick up locations and times. The bus will depart the Newmarket Seniors' Meeting Place (474 Davis Drive) at 8:15 a.m. and the Ray Twinney Recreation Complex (100 Eagle Street West) at 8:45 a.m. Approximate return time is 4 p.m.

Mindful Printmaking Workshop
When: April 12, April 26, May 3 from 1 to 3 p.m.
Where: Newmarket Old Town Hall, Serpa Galleries (460 Botsford Street)
In these workshops, participants will learn mindfulness and apply healing strategies while practicing lino printmaking, where participants will cut designs into linoleum blocks to make art prints. All materials will be provided and participants will go home with their artworks. Art experience is not required and all skill levels are welcome. Participants can register by calling 905-953-5300 ext. 2844 or emailing sganji@newmarket.ca. This workshop is suitable for all ages and admission is free. Ensure you register early, as space is limited. Artist Sharlene Wong will facilitate these workshops.

Mood Walks
When: Saturday, April 13 from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.
Where: Newmarket Old Town Hall (460 Botsford Street)
Mood Walks is a province-wide initiative to promote physical activity in nature and improve physical and mental wellness by reducing barriers and creating new opportunities for people to be physically active. This walk is suitable for easy and intermediate physical activity levels, but is not wheelchair accessible. Meet at Newmarket’s Old Town Hall or register by emailing sganji@newmarket.ca. This free initiative is suitable for all ages and presented with the generous support of Canadian Mental Health Association Ontario division and partners like Hike Ontario, Ontario Council of Agencies Serving Immigrants, Centre for Innovation in Campus Mental Health and Conservation Ontario.

Help keep our neighbourhoods clean with the 41st Annual Community Cleanup. This year features a two week long cleanup period launching the day after Earth Day. From Tuesday, April 23 to Saturday, May 4, Community Cleanup kits will be available at our Town of Newmarket Customer Service Kiosks.

Residents are encouraged to pick up a cleanup kit and take the supplies back to their neighborhoods and parks to clean over the two weeks, at a time that works best for them. 

On Saturday, May 4, join us at the Municipal Offices (395 Mulock Drive) as we host our annual Community Cleanup 2019 event, where we will have Community Cleanup kits available at 9 a.m. for those looking to clean up in the morning, followed by our traditional complimentary BBQ and entertainment from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. where we invite all of those who volunteered their time throughout the two weeks in helping cleanup our community and show our appreciation.

Call for Artwork: Heritage Art Exhibit 2019
Submission Deadline: Friday, May 31
Exhibition Dates: June 10 to August 2
The Town of Newmarket is seeking original two-dimensional artworks created in any medium, no earlier than January 1, 2018. This contest is open to all Ontario residents. To be eligible, the subject of the artwork must focus on the heritage of the Town of Newmarket, including but not limited to the Town's culture, society, economy, history, significant events, architecture or natural environment from the past or in the present.  Each individual can submit up to three (3) works in total.

Get Involved – Take our survey on the Town's Smoking By-law

If you're 19 years or older and live in Newmarket, the Town wants to hear from you! Tell us if you think the Town should prohibit or allow smoking/vaping tobacco and cannabis (also known as marijuana) in areas such as public green spaces, backyards of private residences, public trails, and designated smoking areas on private properties.

The Town will be updating its Smoking By-law and is seeking resident feedback on proposed regulations for smoking and vaping tobacco and cannabis (also known as marijuana) in public and private places. The online survey is now open. The Town will also contact residents via telephone to seek their feedback. The online survey will close on April 30, 2019.









Yard Waste Collection has begun
Yard waste collection is back on a bi-weekly basis. Residents are reminded to bundle branches separately and place plant trimmings, flowers, leaves and weeds in paper yard waste bags or open top garbage cans with two open, rigid handles marked 'yard waste.' Keep excess dirt out of bags.

Please have all items at the curb by 7 a.m. on your scheduled collection day to ensure pick up. Check to see that waste material is set out for collection in accordance with the Recycle Coach App and the Waste and Recycling Calendar. For more information, visit newmarket.ca/wasteandrecycling

Good Friday: Waste and Recycling Day Change
Waste and recycling pick-up for residents on Friday, April 19 will be moved to Saturday, April 20 due to the Good Friday holiday. Please ensure you have all items at the curb for collection. Visit newmarket.ca/wasteandrecycling for more information.
Spring Food Drive
Bring some warmth to someone in need by donating non-perishable food items in support of the Town of Newmarket's Spring Food Drive now until April 17. Traffic Safety
With the warmer weather upon us, the Town of Newmarket reminds drivers to abide by the rules of the road. By-law Enforcement staff will be visiting school zones to ensure drivers are obeying traffic signs, adhering to the kiss and ride program, looking and listening for crossing guards' stop signs and whistles and respecting neighbours properties who live in the vicinity of a school zone. Winter Parking Restrictioms Reminder
Winter parking restrictions are in effect until April 15, 2019. It is prohibited to park vehicle(s) on any roadway:
  • Between the hours of 2 and 6 a.m.
  • That interferes with the clearing of snow regardless of whether or not snow has fallen.

During this time, parking exemptions are not permitted. Parking exemptions will be reinstated beginning April 15, 2019, pending review of the weather.

The following is prohibited year-round:

  • To park a vehicle on a roadway for more than three consecutive hours except between 7 and 11 p.m.
  • In front of or within two feet of a driveway or laneway.
