Transition Exmouth Newsletter for Members and Supporters, April '19

Thanks for all the messages of condolence but for those of you who do not know, my daughter Joanna was killed in the Ethiopian Airlines crash in Africa three weeks ago.

There is much in the media about her and our family but I'd like to make the point that she was travelling to speak at the UN Environment conference in Nairobi so very much a kindred spirit to us all in Transition Exmouth.

This newsletter will be shorter than usual.

29-minute Sessions

Thanks to Debs Rylands the Wild Exmouth ranger who came and gave the talk last month. So sign up for the Wild Exmouth newsletter and find out about all the great things that the team are doing. http://eastdevon.gov.uk/countryside/wild-exmouth/

Thursday 4th April – Kate Smith from the Exeter Deaf Academy

With construction work having begun on-site we must now try to move on from lost opportunities and welcome the Exeter Deaf Academy to our town:

Those with longer memories here than mine remember how much energy Rolle College bought here and it is to be hoped that a new educational institution can bring back some of that. Those who follow the ups & down of the world of education will however be aware that EDA has been much in the news in recent years and not all for the right reasons. It was said that a major restructuring not long ago was 'to manage a future fall in student numbers'. So what's their plan? What can we expect from them and they from us? come along on 4th April and find out from Kate Smith.

May 2nd Janet Cotter - Dartmoor Moor Trees Group

Seeds to Saplings to Woodland - Janet will describe how the volunteer-based charity Moor Trees is creating native, broadleaf woodland across Dartmoor and south Devon - from the raising of locally collected seed in community tree nurseries, to the of planting six thousand saplings a year. Creating new woodland benefits not only biodiversity and climate, but also allows volunteers to engage with a positive environmental project and connect with nature.

Green Drinks

Don't forget, our purely-social Green Drinks follows on from the talks; you are welcome to bring your own ‘green’ table decoration to add to the collection!

Trees

Simon represented us at the NT Lower Halsden Farm tree planting. He's covered this on Facebook but I'm told it went well and we've paid £50 for five trees, on behalf of those of you who paid up-front for your tree planting obligation in your membership.

Neighbourhood Plan

As you'll know this passed at the referendum. Horay.
the question now however is whehther there is going to be any money available to pay for all the many good ideas contained in it. Some of them are there as a result of lobbying by our members. The funds are supposed to come from the CIL contributions but there is a suspicion that any funds expected from that are already spoken for! This is one to ask your candidates before the May 2nd election!!!

Environment Interpretation Centre

Thanks to Noel who continues his battle to get this realised. It is indeed in the NP but as I said above ...
