Week of April 3 - 9

Sermon Teaser

Last week Southminster Church received the donation of three cemetery plots from a family that formerly attended our church. Bill and Darlene Adams became members of our church in 1964 and attended here until the 1980s. Then when Bill died in 2014, his memorial service was held at our church. In 2018 his wife Darlene died. Because they now had burial plots in Sequim, WA, their children decided to donate their cemetery plots at Washington Memorial Park to Southminster church. So last week Bill Gwyn and I went over to look at them. What I discovered was a shocking bit of history and a profound issue for a sermon. Find out about it on Sunday: “An Inclusive Welcome”—Isaiah 56:1-8.

-Ken Onstot

Note: Now that we own three cemetery plots at Washington Memorial Park near SeaTac, the church is looking to sell them at a deeply discounted price to anyone inside or outside the church who might be interested. Contact Bill Gwyn or the church office.

Congregational Meeting - April 14

The Session is calling a Congregational meeting for after worship on Sunday, April 14, for two purposes:
  1. To elect our congregational nominating committee
  2. To explain and take the next steps required by the Presbytery for calling Aaron Willett as an installed associate pastor at our church, including the election of an Associate Pastor Nominating Committee.  Note: Our congregation voted at our annual meeting in February to call Aaron as an installed associate pastor beginning in October.  The Presbytery Committee on Ministry supports this but wants us to go through the normal process of electing an Associate Pastor Nominating Committee that will then bring a recommendation about this to the congregation at a later congregational meeting.  So we are observing these formalities requested by the Presbytery.

Reminder about Lenten Leaves

The Lenten Cross - A Healing Tree

We invite you to take a leaf and write on it:
  • Some healing you need for yourself, like something you need to forgive or for which you need forgiveness.
  • A step toward reconciliation - with God, others, or yourself - that you will take during Lent.
Tie the leaf to the wooden cross in the back of the sanctuary. Together our leaves represent a healing tree. On Easter, the cross will be covered in flowers, representing the reconciliation, healing, and new life made possible by Jesus' resurrection.

Crop Walk

Des Moines Highline Crop Hunger Walk

May 5, 1:15 pm

Location:  Des Moines United Methodist Church

Long-time Southminster attenders are already very familiar with the CROP Hunger Walk,” someone recently said to me. SPC has participated annually for 30 years! WooHoo! For newer folks, here are some facts.  CROP Hunger Walks are community-wide events sponsored by Church World Service and organized by religious groups, businesses, schools and others to raise funds to end hunger in the U.S. and around the world. With its inception in 1969, CROP Hunger Walks are “viewed by many as the granddaddy of charity walks,” notes the Los Angeles Times (Oct. 26, 2009). One fourth of the monies raised here stays here to fight local hunger. Whether or not you can physically walk the (new) 3 mile route May 5th or not, you CAN be part in this important event.  Read how next week.

Recordings of Sunday Sermons

Each week an audio recording of the Sunday scripture readings and sermon is posted on our church website. From the home page of our site select sermons in the upper left. However, if you or anyone you know wants a CD copy of the scripture and sermon, speak to the sound booth person after the service and they can make one. We only make CD copies of the sermons when requested.
