The Nocturnists Podcast Launches Season 2

On The Nocturnists podcast, doctors share stories of joy, sorrow, and self-discovery. Based on the live storytelling event of the same name, and hosted by physician Emily Silverman, this podcast is animated by a deep-seated curiosity about health, illness, and human connection.

Defining Compassion in the Digital Health Age

This article by Dr. David Wiljer and colleagues outlines the protocol for a forthcoming scoping review of how compassion and compassionate care are understood within the evolving field of digital health technologies.

BLR Featured Writing: "Poem for a Friend Growing Lighter and Lighter" by Abe Louise Young

"Oh yes, my friend, I do commit to you entirely, / to the best of my ability, / within the limits of our mutual fragility..." Abe Louise Young's long poem—chosen by judge Kazim Ali as the winner of the BLR's 2017 Marica and Jan Vilcek Prize for Poetry—narrates the relationship between an able-bodied speaker and a friend diagnosed with a brain tumor.

New Annotation on the LitMed Database: Jacalyn Duffin on The House on Lippincott by Bonnie Burstow

"Like the protagonist, Burstow is a daughter of survivors….One of her agendas in this novel is to reveal the effect of trauma on subsequent generations. Another agenda is feminist, in its recounting of the past and in the on-going travails of the present…"

Proposals Invited for 2019 Mayo Clinic Humanities in Medicine Symposium
Attendees are invited to share how they came to connect with health humanities and each other – in settings within clinical walls and communities at large – highlighting the unique ability of the humanities to respond to divergent, yet often interconnected patient, provider, administrative, and public needs. Presentations highlighting successful existing programming, ongoing research, and approaches to curriculum are encouraged. Deadline 4/19/19. More information.

Reproductive Ethics: Challenges and Solutions

At NYU Langone Health
This one-day conference will explore the emergent ethical/legal issues related to: egg donation; embryo donation; sperm donation; the use of direct to consumer testing for adoptees to identify biological parent; third party reproduction; and mitochondrial DNA replacement and uterine transplants. The activity will also include a film shown during the lunch break, Thank You for Coming, which tells the story of two women finding their sperm donor fathers through the use of DNA analysis. The director, and star of the documentary, and other conference presenters will be present for panel discussion after the film.

Presenters include Rita Charon, MD, PhD, a general internist and literary scholar who originated the field of narrative medicine, and Lipi Roy, MD, an internal physician board-certified in addiction medicine who is a clinical assistant professor at NYU Langone Health.
