 WE ARE TURNING SIX !!

Can you believe six years ago, the Abolitionist Law Center (ALC) was founded because two law students wanted to fight against solitary confinement!! It is hard to believe, but six years ago we were working on Shoatz v. Wetzel to get Russell Maroon Shoatz released from solitary confinement after decades of isolation. Since 2013, we've fought for many people who are impacted by incarceration all across Pennsylvania, whether it getting people access to treatment or helping them come home. ALC is in the fight to end mass incarceration. To commemorate our anniversary, we are selling merch for a limited time so that our supporters can be apart of our story. You may order shirts and gear until May 8, 2019.

The Legal Mail Settlement Goes into Effect Today!!!!.

We are so proud to announce the new legal mail procedures will begin on the 6th as a result of our settlement with the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections (PADOC). We joined in fighting against the PADOC's policy fo copying and storing legal mail due to the chilling effects it would have on due process rights and its impact on attorney-client privileges. This settlement is a testament to the tremendous work and research of the wonderful legal team.

We filed a petition to the PA Supreme Court to Free Avis Lee

In following the recommendations of the Superior Court, we have filed a petition to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court in order to #FreeAvisLee. As you may know, Avis was an accomplice to a robbery gone wrong that resulted in the death of another. She was given a mandatory life sentence as a result, even though she possessed no intent to harm and tried to find medical help for the victim.

Our groundbreaking petition seeks to not only bring Avis home, but also allow for other young adults who are similarly situated to have a chance to come before the parole board for a chance at redemption. While mandatory life without parole (LWOP) or as we call it death by incarceration (DBI) continues to plague the Commonwealth. We hope that our petition set the ground work for a way out of this sentencing structure.
