Teams updates

For the Teams app there are 2 updates from the past month that I want to highlight.

1. Adding tabs to private chats

It is now possible to create tabs also for private chats and add apps to the conversation, as has been possible in the channels (see the + on the screenshot above).

Why is this interesting?

One scenario is that you are an ad-hoc  group of people that needs to meet but you don't have a Team for yourselves. You can create private chat and basically have the same functionality as in a Team channel. Name the group chat to something relevant and pin it to top to make it easily accessible.

2. Screen sharing in the private chat

Another interesting update is that you now can share your screen  in the private chat, even without being in a video or audio call.

The scenario here could be that you quickly need to show someone your screen, but don't have time for a call. You can share your entire desktop or a specific window, and you can even let the other person take control to collaborate on content together. To share your screen during a private chat, simply click on the screen icon in the screenshot above and pick one of the available window options.

To-Do updates

It is now possible to add an attachment to a task in the To-Do app. This is great for adding more context to each task.

A very handy scenario is when you need to act on information that you don't have already in your digital workplace, such as a paper invoice.

What you can do then is to open the To-Do app, create a new task and click "Add a file" and take a photo directly from within To-Do. The attachment gets synced to all your devices and you'll have the photo at hand when you are to execute the tasks.

What is coming up in Office 365

There are several interesting functions coming up for Office 365, and I'd like to give a heads-up for these ones:
  1. Notifications in Teams for your Planner task assignments
When you have been assigned an activity in a plan in Planner you will receive a notification in Teams (in the feed). This is great if you use Teams for your internal communication (and you can turn off the email notifications from Planner).
  2. Planner tasks in the To-Do app
You will be able to work with your Planner tasks within the To-Do app, including adding it to the My Day view to focus on what's most important to get done during the workday.
  3. Updated interface for the OneNote app
There's a new interface for the OneNote app that is about to be released by Microsoft. It will make it easier to navigate between several notebooks.
  4. Teams will hide your inactive teams
To allow you to focus on the Teams that you're most active in, the Teams app will be hiding the ones where you're not. If you haven't visited a Team for several weeks, Teams will move in to the “More” section at the bottom of your teams list. You will of course also be able to search for it at the top of the screen.
