David Albrecht of the Metropolitan Energy Center will explain current energy efficiency programs that provide utility rebates for both homeowners and businesses.
These range from residential programs to assist families with improvements such as better insulation, air sealing and improved windows to large-scale investments in commercial boilers and new HVAC systems for businesses.
Albrecht said the goal of the residential energy efficiency programs is to help homeowners save money while improving indoor air quality and allowing them to live more comfortably.
The city recently decided to begin using city crews throughout the city to pick up trash and recyclables curbside starting in May of 2020, replacing private contractors that now provide the service in northern and southern parts of the city.
This will provide an opportunity for possible service improvements long sought by many neighborhood leaders such as returning to regularly scheduled monthly bulky item pickups and furnishing wheeled trash carts to residents.
Also city trash trucks could be equipped to attach snow plows that could do a much better job of clearing residential streets of snow and ice than the smaller and lighter plows attached to pickup trucks now used by some private contractors.
Michael Shaw, assistant to the director of the Neighborhoods & Housing Services Department who is in charge of city trash service, will discuss plans for the transition and hoped for service improvements.
Although the transition is still about a year away, now is the time for residents to let the city know what possible improvements are most important to them so such improvements hopefully can be quickly implemented.
Also meet Swana Lansdown, SKCA codes advocate and first SKCA employee.
Under SKCA’s contract with the city, she will notify residents/owners of residential property in south Kansas City (starting in zip codes 64114 & 64131) about property maintenance/nuisance violations that have been reported to the city and give them a grace period to correct any reported violations before the city takes legal enforcement actions.
At the end of the grace periods, she will inspect the properties and either notify the city the violations have been corrected so the cases can be closed or refer the complaints back to the city for legal enforcement actions if they haven’t been.
