Last Weekend at GHC

After earning promotion with several games still to play, GHC Ladies and Men's 1st teams both finish 2018/19 as League Champions!!!

The Men secured their League Championship with a 1-0 win over Wycombe at Bisham Abbey in their final match of the season. And the Ladies 1s win their league with a game still to play, having beat Oxford 3-0.

Get your copy of this week's Surrey Ad (out this morning)!

Also last Saturday, GHC Ladies 2s, 3s, 4s, and 5s all won their games.

And so did the Men's Shadows, 3s, 4s and Pilgrims. The Men's 2s had a scoreless draw and the Gondoliers a narrow 0-1 loss. Great results overall!

And on Sunday GHC Under 14 Boys won their England Hockey Area Finals to progress to the National Finals taking place on 11th May!

Ladies Section - All First or Second In 2018/19

It would be difficult for GHC Ladies to have had a better season - three teams are League Champions (all promoted), two teams are currently in second place with one already qualified for promotion play-offs and the other in second place with 2 games still to play.

  • Ladies 1s - 1st of 11 confirmed, one game still to play, promoted to South Div 1
  • Ladies 2s - 2nd of 10 confirmed, qualify for promotion playoffs
  • Ladies 3s - 1st of 10, promoted to Surrey Div 6
  • Ladies 4s - 1st of 12 confirmed, 2 games to play, promoted to Surrey Div 9
  • Ladies 5s - 2nd of 12 (behind GHC 4s), 2 games to play to keep 2nd place for promotion play-off place

Men's Teams 2018/19

While the Men haven't enjoyed top two spots in all leagues, most teams have done really well, including of course our Men's 1s - League Champions - and Men's 3s who finish second in their league.

  • Men's 1s - 1st of 12, at least 5 points clear of Trojans who have one game to play. Our Ross Fergusson is currently top goal scorer for the League on 28 (with a West Hampstead player on 27 who still has one match to play); 88 goals scored this season.
  • Men's 2s - 3rd of 12, 3 points behind 2nd but with a much better goal difference (+40 to Wanderers +23) - if only we had had one more win. Well done for scoring 73 goals this season!
  • Men's Shadows - 7th of 11, one match to play, could still finish a mid-table 6th.
  • Men's 3s - 2nd of 12, well ahead of 3rd with one game to play (though not able to catch first). Well done for scoring 80 goals so far this season!
  • Men's 4s - 4th of 10. Much closer to the top than to the bottom in terms of points - well done.
  • Men's Pilgrims - 7th of 8, with half of the losses by only one goal and a few draws it's probably better than it looks, not our best season though.
  • Men's Gondoliers - 4th of 12 according to an average points per game calculation. One match left to play.

This Weekend at GHC

On Saturday, having already won the League, the Ladies 1s have their final game at East Grinstead. Ladies 4s and 5s are also in action - at home - as are the Men's 3s and the Gondoliers.

Also best of luck to the Pilgrims away to Newbury and Thatcham.

On Sunday a group of Under 8s are training early morning - great to see how eager some of our newest players are!

The Girls Under 12s and 14s are playing league matches.

And the Ladies 1s are at Lee Valley for the semi-final of the England Hockey Tier 2 National Championship!

AGM 2019 - Tue 14 May 7pm
Director of Hockey to Be Announced Soon

The Board have been working hard with input from across the club on updating the 3-5 year plan for the Club moving forward.

A 'stakeholders' meeting was held in January to gain support for the way forward proposal which includes a new Director of Hockey role for the Club.

There was very positive support for the proposal, and the Board are further planning for next season and beyond.

There will be some exciting news about next season coming soon. If you would like to see the presentation please ask your Captain or Squad Manager (all have received a copy) or email intouch@guildfordhc.com

Please consider taking on even a really small job to help out next season - if you aren't already. Many hands make light (and more fun) work. Get in touch with your Captain or Squad Manager or any of our Contacts in Who's Who

Watch out for more news as we plan next season and beyond. And please come to the Annual General Meeting:

Former GHC Juniors Win BUCS Men's Championship

GHC Junior Section alumni James Ferguson and Alex Sweet were in the Exeter University team that won the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) Hockey Men's Championship on Wednesday!!

It was Exeter's first BUCS Hockey Championship, though they came close last year having made it to semi-finals.

The final score was 1-1 after a Durham goal scored from a PC after time had run out was disallowed.

Exeter won the ensuing penalty flick shootout 4-2 with Elliot Bullman in goal. Elliot spent two seasons with GHC as our Fortitude GK coach.

George Carson was also in the team - some may remember that George spent a season 2 years ago at GHC coaching our Under 14 Girls.

Well done to all!
