Future Perspectives on 3D printing for SCI repair

Dr. Paul Dalton

Wednesday April 17
4-5pm in the Lecture Hall

Paul Dalton is Germany’s first Professor in Biofabrication, based at the University of Würzburg. A graduate from Curtin University in Perth, Australia, he was part of a successful team in the 1990s taking an artificial cornea from concept to the clinic at the Lions Eye Institute in Perth. Paul post-docced with Molly Shoichet at the University of Toronto, Canada, on neural tissue engineering and then with Martin Möller at RWTH Aachen, Germany, using nanotechnology for biomedical research. As a Welcome Trust advanced training award recipient in the United Kingdom and then at Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China, he investigated how biomaterials in the spinal cord can alter the injury cascade. However, it was the impressive capability of melt electrowriting (MEW) as a 3D printing technology that led him to work at the Queensland University of Technology, Australia until 2014. With over 25 years’ experience across several disciplines, Paul has published over 100 research articles in journals including Advanced Materials, Progress in Polymer Science and Nature Materials with more than 7,000 citations, including over 1,000 citations in 2018.

We are SO ahead of the game

The 2020 ICORD Annual Research Meeting will take place on Tuesday March 10 and Wednesday March 11. We have some exciting speakers lined up!
Put this in your calendar right now.

Travel grants available for people with SCI

The Rick Hansen Institute is sponsoring travel grants for 8 individuals with SCI to attend the Journal of Wound Care’s 5th International Conference on Skin Integrity and Infection Prevention at Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, April 26-27. This conference will bring together a multidisciplinary team of expert international speakers to explore and investigate issues surrounding wound infection, identification, prevention and management of pressure.
Please email sciinquiries@rickhanseninstitute.org by Friday, April 5 with your interest or share this with those in your networks who may be interested.

Meet Zeina Waheed, Research Coordinator at the Rick Hansen Institute

Where are you from / how did you end up in Vancouver?
My family moved to Vancouver from Pakistan when I was 7 years old and I have lived here ever since.
Describe your job/what you do in the BSCC in three sentences or less.
I am a Research Coordinator at the Rick Hansen Institute. I work with the Research Team mostly on projects that use data collected in the Rick Hansen Spinal Cord Injury Registry (RHSCIR).
What’s your favourite thing about your job / research?
I enjoy learning from my colleagues and working with them on projects that aim to make positive impacts on the care and outcomes for patients and people living with SCI.
What do you like to do when you’re not working?
I have recently started skiing so a lot of my time nowadays has been trying to go as much as I can before the season ends! Other than that I enjoy cooking, travelling, and relaxing by either watching tv, reading or wasting time on the internet.
What’s your superpower?
My memory for relatively unimportant information; sometimes it’s a superpower, sometimes it’s a curse.
What’s the best book you’ve read, or show you’ve seen lately?
The best book I’ve ever read is Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë. I first read it as a teenager and it’s one book that I will never get tired of reading.
If you could have dinner with any scientist or clinician in history, who would it be and why (and where would you go to eat)?
Michael Smith: in addition to being a brilliant scientist he seemed to be a kind and generous person. I would take him to Pho Goodness!
Volunteer to be profiled! Or nominate someone. You don't even have to know them (that's the whole point of this column!) Send ideas to Cheryl.

TODAY: Meet some new people, make some connections

The next D.R.I.N.K.S. (Discussions Relevant to Inspiring New Knowledge & Science) social will happen TODAY (March 28) from 4 to 7pm at Mahoney's Stamps Landing. The purpose (if you need an excuse to stay a little later!) is to bring together faculty, clinicians, scientists, residents, trainees, staff, entrepreneurs, bio/pharm staff/execs/veterans, lawyers, VCs, journalists/editors, sabbaticals, and others with common interests in biomedical/translational research & discovery/commercialization once a month to casually interact and meet new people over a beverage of their choice and/or appie. It's also becoming a great way for people who have just moved to or are visiting Vancouver, or looking for collaborations, jobs, networking/socializing, to meet others in research/biomedical field/industry.

Game Changers: How Are Assistive Technologies Making Sport Accessible?

From basketball to recreational skiing and hiking, assistive technologies are helping break down barriers to sport participation for persons with disabilities or health concerns – and to support individual mental and physical wellbeing.
Join us as our panel of athletes, changemakers, and leaders share their personal experiences, and discuss ways that sport is being transformed – by technology and people – to broaden participation and to change our understandings of (dis)ability. Beyond just technology, we’ll hear stories of resilience and perseverance, while also gaining a better understanding of what more is needed to ensure equal participation for all.

Interesting things

Eggs are confusing

Eggs, which were once good for you, then bad for you, then again good for you, are now bad for you once more.

Orange juice is disappointing
On the topic of breakfast foods you can't be sure about, did you know that your "freshly-squeezed orange juice" might have been sitting for up to a year in a giant underground vat?
Do you smell toast?
Final item for our breakfast-themed column: Did you know that it was a Canadian neuroscientist who mapped the human brain while developing surgical treatment for epilepsy, and discovered the burnt-toast-smelling area? You probably did.

BSCC and UBC Resources

What is the BICP?

You've likely seen the badge in our newsletter and the posters around the atrium, telling people about the Blusson Integrated Cures Partnership, but do you know about all of the different kinds of research and activities being supported by the BICP? ICORD and the Rick Hansen Institute have created a webpage to inform you about the work that we're doing together with the Rick Hansen Foundation through this unique collaboration.

A microscopic announcement from VWR!

Please contact Clare or Nadia for more information and promotional offers.
