ANOTHER STEP TOWARDS SIGNING .NG

Last week (18th - 20th March 2019), NIRA Academy collaborated with the Network Startup Resource Center (NSRC) University of Oregon to mount a training workshop on the Domain Name System Security Extensions (DNSSEC) at the NiRA Office Complex in Lagos.
 
The three-day DNSSEC workshop was designed for key players in the Internet community (Regulators, Internet Service Providers, Telecommunication companies, NiRA Accredited Registrars, and the Academic community) who provide online services to cryptographically protect contents online and enhance the security of the Internet by effectively deploying DNSSEC.

DNSSEC IN A NUTSHELL

The Domain Name System Security Extension Workshop put together by the Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA) and Network Startup Resource Center (NSRC) has brought about more awareness and understanding in the ecosystem. It provided the opportunity for participants to have a clearer picture of what the domain security extension means to the participants, and how it works.
 
In a nutshell, the DNSSEC protocol uses public key cryptography to give authentication and integrity to the DNS queries. It is simply data authenticity and integrity which is achieved  by signing the Resource Record sets with a private key.

ICANN66 FELLOWSHIP APPLICATION ROUND

On the 11th March 2019, Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) launched an application round for candidates interested in participating in the ICANN66 Annual General Meeting through the Fellowship Program. ICANN66 will take place from 2nd to 7th November 2019 in Montreal, Canada. The deadline to apply is 11 April 2019, 23:59 UTC. Successful applicants will be announced on 2 July 2019.

Student Projects and Internship Opportunities at AFRINIC – 2019
AFRINIC wishes to collaborate with students at undergraduate or graduate level in form of student projects (practicum) or through on-site or remote internship at AFRINIC. The duration of the projects are indicative and will depend on the resources allocated to each project and the availability of the students. It is possible to accommodate more than 1 student or intern per project, depending on their interest, availability and funding.
 
AFRINIC is also open to other projects related to the technical aspects of the Internet. These can include any project related to:
  • End-to-end Internet performance measurement
  • Internet topology characteristics, including peering and routing
  • Application-level performance, including DNS, Web, CDNs, Cloud Computing
  • Detection of middleboxes, censorship, and content filtering
  • Data analytics and visualization for network monitoring and traffic analysis
