The Delta State University Chorale returned from their annual spring tour, March 18-21, 2019 with much success. This ensemble of gifted musicians, represented DSU on the recruitment tour by singing in the evenings at Methodist Churches in Minden, LA, Magee, MS and Brookhaven, MS. During the day, the students worked diligently at recruiting students at Caddo Magnet, Ruston, Richland, and Pearl High Schools as well as the Mississippi School of the Arts. Chorale and Chamber Singers are conducted by Director of Choral Activities, Dr. Julia Thorn. Assisting Dr. Thorn as collaborative artists at the piano were Yeim Kim, Young Hye Min, Sung-Eun Rye, Semi Dong, and Andrew Wasylina. Instrumental soloists included in the program were Amanda Lutz on flute and Kaitlyn Pignataro on oboe. Soloists were Caleb Chambers, JaMareus Freeman, Gabe McGee, Austin Means, and Timothy Peoples.

The program titled When Our Voices Blend in Song, included a tremendous variety of musical styles. Beloved composers, Handel, Brahms and Mendelssohn were complimented by music of artists that are actively writing today. Audiences of alumni and new friends were treated to compositions of folk songs, musical theater arrangements, spirituals, and classical works. In addition to the Chorale, a newly formed chamber ensemble presented madrigals from the Renaissance and Contemporary periods of music history and a delightful work, In Vino Veritas, that is a favorite of the students.

“I have so enjoyed my work with the students of the Chorale and Chamber Singers throughout this year. They are an incredible group of young musicians that are dedicated to learning to sing to the best of their abilities. They are bright individuals who bring to the ensemble a sense of pride in belonging to this musical organization which has grown in quality tremendously this year. Their love of singing is evident as they have the opportunity to share through choral music something far greater than they could do as individuals. As the conductor, I am happy to be a part of this very special musical community,” explains Dr. Thorn. “I am often reminded of the joy we bring to our audiences and each other in making music together.

The students will complete their year of performances with a spring concert on April 16, 2019 at the Bologna Performing Arts Center at 7:30 pm. This concert is free and open to the public
