Ngā mihi o te tau hou, greetings for the new year

Our thoughts and aroha go out to Muslim communities in Aotearoa. We would like to express our sincere sympathy to whānau who lost their loved ones through this tragic event in Christchurch.

Ngā Kaitiaki Mauri Updates

Te Matatini 2019

I hari a NKM ki te whakauru i te rohe o Te Matatini, hauora, me te whakawhetai ki a Te Matatini mō tēnei wāhi

Te Matatini 2019 certainly provided the perfect avenue to be able to reach our people from all corners, of not only Aotearoa but globally. The platform was far reaching
It was a privilege to share with tangata whenua our values and principles and engage in kōrero that we are the specialists in kaupapa Māori sexual violence services. We provide services from aronga Māori (Māori world view). We know that whānau have the answers for addressing whānau violence.

There were many disclosures during Te Matatini, which highlighted to us the immense importance of us being present. Further discussions are underway on how we can do this better, next time, and have better accessibility for our whānau

it is imperative to support the elimination of sexual violence and provide better outcomes for not only tangata whenua, but our country. Whānau came from all around Aotearoa, and others that visited our stall were from London, Hawaii, America, Germany, Rarotonga, Fiji and other countries. Many were from Australia. Many visitors to our stall had no idea that Nga Kaitiaki Mauri exists.

Those that left an impression were some of the First Nations people of Canada who gave comments about how we as a people are working and getting our Government to understand that what’s good for Māori is good for everyone. Many were so impressed that we the Indigenous people were loud and proud to be out there and in their face about rape and sexual violence.

One of the highlights for us as kaimahi was seeing the tamariki enjoying the space that we provided for them to relax and enjoy the colouring books that NKM were able to produce for this event. Keeping the tamariki busy provided a prime opportunity to kōrero with their parents about the mahi we do. Our rangatahi also stopped often at our stall to share their views.

NGĀ MIHI - ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

Ngā mihi to all the visitors to our stall who filled out our survey. We were able to provide a daily prize with the support of the following organisation's koha;

Māori Arts Gallery, The Body Shop, Batavian and KD One Skincare

We would like to acknowledge Te Puni Kōkiri in helping us get to Te Matatini to raise awareness to eliminate sexual violence - Katia te mahi tūkino tangata

Ngā mihi nunui koutou ki a tautoko

Congratulations to Ngā Tūmanako kapa haka group as the winners of Te Matatini ki te Ao 2019.

NKM Wānanga

Two wānanga were hosted by Ngā Kaitiaki Mauri (NKM). One in Te Whanganui-ā-Tara/Wellington in February and the other in Ōtepoti/Dunedin in March. The wānanga are an opportunity for NKM to build the capacity of other Kaupapa Maori (KM) Services who work with whānau affected by mahi tūkino. The format of the wānanga was deliberately flexible this was to ensure the needs were met for the kaimahi who attended. Following whanaungatanga, updates were given about the mahi of NKM and there were brief presentations on the practice of a Kaupapa Maori approach. It was clear at both wānanga about the value of meeting kanohi ki te kanohi. This supports aronga Māori (Māori world veiw). Another highlight for Kaimahi was engaging with KM practioners of mahi tūkino.

The wānanga were well received by those that attended. Feedback from participants included:
“Giving us the tools to open up the kōrero”,

“I feel very emotional about this mahi and the wānanga has drawn that out today in a positive way”,

“It would be great to have you guys to come down and talk to all our kaimahi”

Tauiwi Caucus Updates

Learning Hub and Introduction to Sexual Violence Crisis Work
Pilot Updates and Extension

The E-learning Pilots are well on their way and access to all lessons is now available.  There are 137 participants logged into the Learning Hub, testing the course and providing feedback.

Some feedback back we have received about the course:

“Very informative and enjoyed the simple way it was relayed.”

“This is all very informative to me as I am a beginner. Found it very helpful. But as discussed in prior lessons would have been better if the script was available and if the length of the video was short helpful to retain information.”

“Great modules, I like the resources, which provide incredibly useful summaries of best practice guidelines – another thought-provoking module encouraging me to reflect on individual and
organisational practice. Thank you.”

"I had to do an immense amount of research to find out a lot of the things I knew I needed to know to support survivors when beginning this work, particularly all the structural things like ACC systems and Police and how it all of that works. This training has all the information in one place so will be so valuable to any crisis workers who are starting out in the future."

Feedback about the content:

“Really thought the comment about being culturally informed rather than learning as you go from the client about their culture was an excellent point”

“Gives a really valuable understanding of the difficulties Māori can have in dealing with sexual abuse if they do not have the supports, they would choose in place”

We want to acknowledge and congratulate the four people who have completed the course so far:

Mel Calvesbert - Pilot 1
Sue Swinbourne - Pilot 2
Elisha Powell - Pilot 2
Zoe Warren - Pilot 3

A huge thank you to Mohawk Media for their ongoing support on this project.

Because of popular demand and to give more time for people to complete the course. ALL pilots will close on 19th May.
