Ngā mihi nui ki a koutou kātoa te whānau whānui o te Kura Pokapū o Whakatū –
Greetings to friends and family of Nelson Central School.

Thank you to everyone who has worked with our teachers to finalise next term's learning goals for your children, in goal setting interviews this week.
Those that have missed this opportunity will need to contact their teacher and make a time to do this before the end of the term (in two weeks time.)
We are aiming for all our families to have been invovled in this process so we can work closely to support each other for your children.
We work hard to ensure the best opportunities we can for our students.

We also have the opportunity this week to make the whole school system the best it can be for all our akōnga.  Is our education system working the best it can? Is it fair?

A review of compulsory education has been published here.

Our Schooling Futures, Stronger Together l Whiria Ngā Kura Tūātinitini,

There are some massive changes recommended and we have until next 7 April to have our say about these recommendations.  (They extended it from 31 March)

Here is the online survey

Please take the time to read think and feedback your thoughts about what will become the blueprint for the next thirty years of education in New Zealand.

Before and After School Care Options

BEFORE SCHOOL CARE

The school offers before school care, located in the school library. This is available from 7:30 am to 8:30 am at a cost of $2 per session. Please note that except for those children attending before school care children are not allowed in the school grounds until after the 8:30 am bell has rung.

There are various options available for after school care, including one based at school (Yikes). Please call into the office for more information.

Carparking at the Masonic Hall

Please do NOT park in the Masonic Carpark from this week onwards.
Unfortunately a small number of our families have been persistent in abusing this privilege, and so this offer has been withdrawn.
We have greatly appreciated the use of it over the past two years, and continue to appreciate the huge generosity in allowing us ongoing use of the hall many times throughout the year.

Please make the effort to park and walk from a little further afield so that parks closest to our school can be used by those with your babies or mobility issues.

We also appreciate your support  by parking safely before picking up your children.
It is not safe to stop beside the big tree and have your child jump into the car whilst in the middle of the road.
Please be patient and safe. Our children are worth it!

Gumboot Up on Friday 5 April!

We're asking you, your teachers and parents to wear gumboots to school in support of Gumboot Friday. Put your gumboots on and bring along a gold coin donation (if you can). All funds raised on the day will help provide free counselling to kids who need it.

Gumboot Friday is a new initiative by New Zealander of the Year, Mike King, and I Am Hope. We're aiming to raise $2million for kids who need some mental health support. You can find out more about Gumboot Friday at www.iamhope.org.nz/gumbootfriday

Please encourage your friends, family and community to #GumbootUpNZ on 5 April!

Kowhai News
In Kowhai we have started our new multi sensory phonics programme that will help us to blend sounds together to read words and to break words into sound chunks to spell the words. This phonics programme has been developed as part of a collaborative inquiry between Year 1 and Year  2 teachers. It includes the best parts of our favourite phonics programmes that we have used in the past plus some bits that are unique to us. This collaborative project aims to better support literacy skills as children transition from Year 1 into Year 2.

The event will take place around 10am.  Students will compete in a team with a 1km run, 2km bike, and 150m swim.

ROYAL NEW ZEALAND BALLET:

Last Friday, 32 Totara students had the opportunity attend the ballet at Royal Theatre. Above is a photo of a traditional ballerina using point shoes.

Did you know:
-Professional ballerina's need new 'point shoes' at least every week!
-These ballerina's are working 8 - 10 hour days during the week and a 12 hour day on a Saturday depending on the shows they have.
-Most of these ballerina's have been dancing since they were 4.

Go active NCS

In the Totara Syndicate we are doing an inquiry around how we can encourage more active transport in our school. We have currently have had 104 responses to our recent survey where you identified the way you usually get to school and the barriers you have to using more active transport. We will be investigating these barriers and look forward to making a booklet for new whanau to inform people how to get to school using more active transport.

We think people should use active transport because it does not let carbon into the atmosphere it also it keeps you strong fit and healthier. It keeps around the roads round the school safe from smog and and cars. We look forward to sharing our safe walking and biking routes with you soon.

Remember to come to our Wheels Day next week on the 3rd of April to celebrate our success in active transport. You can meet new friends and enjoy the biking and scootering courses on the front field. There is music, hot hot chocolate, tea and coffee. Breakfast is koha.

Please, if you speak a language in your home and it doesn't appear here can you let us know so we can add to the cloud .
