How to Protect Yourself from Identity Theft

According to the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, if you feel that you are in danger of identity theft or you worry that it could happen to your child or an incapacitated adult that you are the guardian of, you can place a freeze on your credit. Credit freezing bars credit reporting agencies from releasing your credit report. This is something that has to be requested from each individual agency (Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion) and lasts as long as you would like it to. Freezing your credit will stop new accounts from being opened in your name and prevent your credit score from declining by credit check. It may delay or inhibit your ability to apply for loans or anything that requires a credit check.
In order to start this process, you must comply with the instructions that each agency has for freezing credit. This can be found on their websites linked here: Equifax, Expeiran, and TransUnion. These agencies are not allowed to charge you for placing or lifting a freeze. However, when you file for a freeze, you are given a PIN to lift the freeze and the replacement of a lost PIN can cost up to $10.
Just as you have to request for the freeze to begin, you have to request for it to end and the agency has three business days to comply with the request to lift. You are also able to temporarily lift the freeze to open a new account, but agencies are allowed to charge you for this, so check with each individual agency to see what their policy is.
Please note that freezing your credit is different from having a fraud alert placed on your account. Additionally, if you are interested in placing a credit freeze for a minor or incapacitated adult, you will need to contact each individual reporting agency so that they may help you with their process.

Car Seat Inspection Stations

 For parents, knowing that their child is safe is absolutely essential to peace of mind. The Seminole County Sheriff’s office wants to make sure that parents can have that peace of mind, so they facilitate different free car seat inspection stations. Four out of five car seats are not properly installed and can result in traumatic injury or death in a car accident. In order to prevent these tragedies, you can make a free appointment to visit one of multiple locations to ensure that your child’s car seat is properly installed. When you go to your appointment, bring your car seat, instruction manual, and vehicle manual. Remember to give at least 24 hours’ notice for an appointment and they are free!

Kids House

According to Kid’s House, nearly 4,000 cases of child abuse are reported each year to Seminole County Child Protective Services and over 2,000 of those children are aided by Kid’s House. Child abuse can be anything from physical, emotional, or sexual abuse to child neglect and exposure to domestic violence. Kid’s House aims to prevent these cases and support victim and families affected by child abuse. The Kid’s House facility, located in Sanford, hosts several resources to help them reach their goals.
The Child Protection Team is made up of three integral programs which all come together to aid victims of child abuse. The Mental Health Program provides medical expertise for investigating and treating those suffering from child abuse. This program offers therapeutic and supportive services, specialized therapy, trauma education, and training for community mental health clinicians and service providers.
The Medical Trauma Program evaluates victims of abuse. The kid-friendly examination rooms are used to assess and treat the children in a comfortable environment. This includes forensic medical examinations and diagnostic testing for victims. Along with this, the Medical Trauma Program also partners with Florida Hospital for Children, Seminole State College Nursing, Kaiser University, ECPI University, and EMT/Paramedic programs to provide didactic training for child abuse.
The Child Advocate Program provides education and healing to families of child abuse. This program is vital in ensuring comfort and the necessary resources for families to navigate through their hardship. Services of this program include crisis intervention, education on abuse dynamics, Victim of Crime Compensation assistance, and referrals to community resources.
Kid’s house offers a full spectrum of resources to prevent cases of child abuse and aid the victims affected by it.
