March 2019 Newsletter

I was just thinking: what is it that has made Feathers so successful over the years? Could it be that there are few retail establishments where you can plonk yourself down on a settee, have a nice, hot, steamy fresh coffee and perhaps a crunchy Jammy Dodger, read some interesting magazines or simply look at some of the stunning bird photos on the large TV screen. It may be the friendly, welcoming atmosphere which some would regard as unusual when you go shopping. Probably having a handsome, well mannered, knowledgeable Joe bloke to take care of all your needs helping to make your visits stress free and enjoyable goes some way to make you think *this Feathers is a super place*. The huge range of options for feed, feeders and especially binoculars goes a long way to ensure there is every chance your purchases will fill all your needs while being top quality products and very competitively  priced......... I seem to have forgotten where I was going with this but I do know I love mashed potato.

As with thousands of others over the last few months I thought I would mention *Brexit*.

Anyway, the next few weeks should be a great time to get out if you can and welcome all the migrating birds that come to us in the UK. Millions of warblers, finches, swallows, martins, majestic birds of prey, terns, waders and sea birds have already reached our shores filling the air with their beautiful songs, their acrobatics and their amazing home building abilities. Customers are already getting robins, blue & great tits using their garden nest boxes. I love this time of year, so much going on, when you watch a flock of swallows speeding acrobatically through the air it is hard to believe they will have probably flown up from South Africa, some of our nesting terns may have come from further afield. Sadly I find just going to Sainsbury's a huge chore. "Not something you do very often" said Fennella.

Lastly a little brain banger I got from Joe... What has four letters, sometimes has nine and never has five.

I did see some super birds in The Gambia a few weeks ago, you will find them here if you click on this photo.
All my latest flickr shots of birds at Feathers and from my garden can be found here...

As revealed in the photo below, the answer to last month's Mystery Bird is song thrush. The winner of a fabulous £10 Feathers voucher is David Cook. Congratulations to all those who answered correctly and thanks to all who took part. Check out the bottom of the newsletter for the next one.
February's 'Mystery Bird' was a song thrush
In February I wrote how we seem to have missed many winter visiting finches and thrushes, likely because of the mild weather, but a few of you have just recently spotted siskins and even redpolls on your feeders. A pair of siskins are now regularly visiting Allan's garden and the male siskin is this month's newsletter header.

Our most exciting sighting this month was a red kite last Saturday. Now is a great time to spot red kites locally, as some (but not all) kites migrate south for the winter and will be arriving back in the UK for the summer. Fortunately the bird we saw above the shop put on a nice show before carrying on its journey north.
Our last red kite sighting was on exactly the same day of March last year!
In years gone by we used to have a treecreeper at this time of year who could often be seen feeding on the old stone walls around the car park. Having missed them for a while, it was lovely to spot a pair behaving the same way yesterday, picking at the moss in search of food.
As the clocks go forward tonight, the longer evenings will mean more time for me to get out to Rye Harbour after work. Even yesterday I managed a short walk out to watch the sunset, which was rather magnificent.
Joe
