Great Lakes Metro Chambers Fly-In

The Greater Pittsburgh Chamber of Commerce (GPPC) and the Great Lakes Metro Chambers Coalition, which the GPCC is one of the coalition leads, met with members of Congress and their staff during a two-day fly-in to Washington, D.C. in March. The discussion focused on the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) and immigration.

The coalition met at the White House with staff from the National Economic Council and the Department of Energy to discuss the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, Deputy U.S. Trade Representative C.J. Mahoney to discuss USMCA, Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-CA 19) on immigration and Sen. Bob Casey (D-PA) and Sen. Rob Portman (R-OH) on the Coalition’s comprehensive agenda.

CEO in the Classroom to Develop K-12 Policy Changes

Nearly 30 CEOs and C-Suite leaders from southwestern Pennsylvania organizations, including the Allegheny Conference on Community Development CEO Stefani Pashman, Vice President of Workforce Operations & Programs Linda Topoleski and the Chamber Vice President Jenn Beer, shadowed a student for the day at seven schools around the 10-county Pittsburgh region – participating in all the student’s classes and school activities. The shadowing experience is central to CEO in the Classroom, an initiative created by the Allegheny Conference’s Workforce Steering Committee, chaired by David Malone, in partnership with the Grable Foundation.

The March 12th event was an outgrowth of the Allegheny Conference’s landmark workforce study, Inflection Point: Supply, Demand and the Future of Work in the Pittsburgh Region, released in 2016 and updated in 2017. The Conference’s leadership identified a disconnect between regional business leaders and the K-12 education system. Now, with the initiative in place, we are making strides to better engage educators to develop solutions to regional workforce challenges.

Corporate leaders who participated in the shadowing experience will gather early this month to collectively consider how the regional business community might collaborate with educators for maximum impact around workforce preparation. They will also discuss advocating for any meaningful policy changes that could improve the K-12 system’s ability to prepare a thriving and highly competitive regional workforce.

What brought British Airways back to Pittsburgh? - Pittsburgh!

As our region’s economic footprint grows, infrastructure must grow with it. British Airways return to Pittsburgh is yet another sign that Pittsburgh is on the rebound. Our region’s infrastructure assets are crucial to its competitiveness and vitality, and the restoration of a year-round, four day per week air service to London Heathrow only strengthens both.
