UC College of Medicine Complementary and Integrative Medicine Elective

Ten 4th year medical students took part in the Complementary and Integrative Medicine Elective during March-April 2019.

This elective is designed to broaden students' knowledge of complementary and integrative medicine modalities. Students learn to incorporate overall health and well-being principles into clinical practice to promote prevention of disease and healing mechanisms in patient care plans. This experience is designed to improve the students' role as a future physician and to promote self-care opportunities.

Elective Co-Directors: Geraldine Wu, MD and John Sacco, MD

Tai Chi is a movement therapy used to open joints, promote circulation, improve balance and increase range of motion.  This class will incorporate slow, comfortable movements that combine with breathing, mindfulness and gentle stretching. Learn more or view the Tai Chi class schedule >>

The Gentle Yoga Mat class enables participants to center body, breath, and mind, to promote overall wellness. Through the use of props and expert guidance, individual patient needs will be addressed. Learn more or view the MS Yoga class schedule >>

Spring Clean Your Wellness Routine
Spring is often considered a time of cleansing, renewal and growth. But spring cleaning doesn't have to be limited to removing the accumulated debris of winter months. Use this spring season to try something new or detox from unhealthy habits.

Inhaling the fresh air of spring can be the first step to a new breathing practice. Preliminary studies of meditation and focused breathing suggest that it may activate brain regions that guide the parasympathetic, or “rest and digest,” processes of the body.

Try this simple breathing meditation:
  • Relax and sit up with your spine straight, feet on the ground, hands in your lap, listening on purpose with the attitude that there no place is more important than this present moment.
  • Relax every muscle in your body and focus on your breath.
  • Notice the feeling of air through your nose as you breathe in and fill your lungs.
  • Slowly let the air through your mouth, as if you were blowing through a straw.
  • Use the breath as an anchor, and notice any body sensatioins. Where do you feel tension?
  • If your mind wanders, if you have thoughts or hear sounds, notice them like passing waves, and return back to the breath.
  • Practice for 5-10 minutes.
Here are 10 additional easy ways you can meditate each day.

May this season be one of renewal and self-growth!
