I recently was introduced to my newest client Christian Tötzke through a dear friend of many years, Arne Zimmerman. Arne has asked me to introduce Christian and his team from Hyrox to my client Bentley Meeker for the purpose of the upcoming series of events in America in 2019/2020.
Once he explained to me the concept for Hyrox I was beyond eager to develop a working relationship with this hidden gem and his disruptive approach to a mass participant sport. Please read the interview to learn more.

Q&A with Christian Tötzke
How did you come up with this idea?
I´ve been creating sport events for the past 25 years and was constantly looking for the next gamechanging idea. Finally like 3 years ago I´ve started to look at the world of fitness and the millions of people going regularily to a gym or fitness studio. Actually over 65 million people in the US alone and more than 50% of them are calling fitness their sport.
But there is no event existing where these people can compete with thousands of others and give their regular training a new goal - like runners do at Marathons etc. That striked me and I said to myself, we need to change this and design a new sport event for fitness, where really every body can compete in.
Can you give us the skinny on what one can expect by participating in Hyrox?
Hyrox is a competition with a mix of running and functional fitness work-out. It´s a timed race with the goal to finish the whole circuit as fast as possible and you do this with up to 3,000 other participants.
Creating such an atmosphere in the world of fitness had only been seen at Cross Fit Games so far. ON top of that HYROX is a premium indoor event, turning huge covention halls into exciting sport arenas with music ad light effects - expect something different, you have ever seen at other mass participation events.
How can a brand or business participate?
We have PUMA as our global founding partner on our side and are looking for max up to 6 other brands that wish to change the world of fitness with us. We go way beyond classical sponsorship and are seeking for joint business cases around the events and 365 days a year with our growing HYROX community.
Puma is an international brand. Do all sponsors need to be international? Or is there an opportunity for local businesses to be involved?
No. But we look for minimum nation wide partnerships. Brands that want to grow with us across the US!
Where else in the World are there / will there be similar events?
As previously said, HYROX is literally the first mass participation fitness and also indoor event series. We are very ambitious and already negotiate with most of the relevant indoor locations. Combied with our global community ad the HYROX World Championships I don`t see any copy concept coming up soon.
What does Hyrox mean or did you make that name up? It’s cool, by the way. Thanks and actually it was a creative process with lot`s of beer involved, then testing but has no deeper meaning. We wanted something cool, but also unique and able to protect globally as a wordmark.
What’s the most outrageous sport you personally have done? Probably surfing the Mentawai Islands with way over head high waves and shallow reefs below you.
