Undergraduate Research Symposium

Maryville College will hold its fourth Undergraduate Research Symposium on Fri., April 5 from 1:30 until 3:30 p.m. During the event, students from all eight academic divisions will present posters, original research and creative projects in various locations inside the Clayton Center for the Arts.

Undergraduate research has been a distinctive feature of the MC curriculum since 1947, when a two-semester, faculty-supervised independent study was made a graduation requirement of all students. Although the name for it has changed over the years — Special Studies, Independent Study, Senior Thesis, Senior Study — the required project is a common experience binding alumni whose graduations span more than 70 years. The Senior Study is not the only form of undergraduate research undertaken here at MC. This year’s symposium also will include presentations of scholarly work completed by sophomores and juniors in collaboration with faculty and fellow classmates.

We would love to see parents and family members attend this important event!

Interim Vice President and Dean of the College

Academics: Senior Rites of Passage

The Senior Rites of Passage is an online “course” graduating seniors complete in the Tartan from April 22 through May 3. Students will receive an email on Mon., April 22 with instructions for accessing the course, which will include information related to Commencement activities, as well as items students need to complete (such as returning library books, exit interviews for student loans, the graduate placement survey and resolving any outstanding fines). Questions about the Senior Rites of Passage can be directed to Denise Cantrell.

Registrar's Office: Summer Courses

Summer school is a good way to catch up or get ahead on credit hours and/or course requirements! Students can register online for summer courses through June 1. See the summer 2019 course schedule on the MC website. Students who are planning to take summer classes elsewhere need pre-approval to do so. They should process the Transfer Credit Pre-Approval Form, which requires an advisor and division or core chair approval and is kept on file in the Registrar’s Office until the official transcript is received from the other school.

Academic Affairs: Online Courses Through College Consortium

The Office of Academic Affairs is pleased to announce that Maryville College will be joining the College Consortium this April. The College Consortium is a coalition of more than 100 institutions nationwide that draw on one another’s online programming to supplement their own curriculums. The Consortium is a great way for a student who has run into academic trouble to get back on track academically.

“A student who got a D, an F or a W in a regular course at Maryville might have the option to retake the course online this summer through the College Consortium for a higher grade. That would boost the student’s GPA and give them a second chance to do well here,” said Dr. Dan Klingensmith, Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the College. “I think this is a great tool for helping students to keep on track. With the Consortium, we can pick courses online that match our existing courses. In some cases, it will also be a chance for students who have participated in Commencement but are not quite finished with all their courses to take some final requirements without having to be physically on campus.”

The interim dean and the academic division chairs are working on a list of online courses that could be available for students who need to retake some of the courses that students often struggle with; they aim to get that list out later this month. If you think your Maryville College student might benefit from the program, be on the lookout for information from Academic Affairs.

Post Office: End-of-Semester Reminders

It’s almost time for students to pack up their belongings and leave campus for the summer. Students will leave campus starting April 26. Please keep this in mind when sending mail/packages. The MC Post Office has no control over how long it takes for mail to get to campus. Families: Please remind your student to pick up all mail before leaving campus. For more information about post office services at Maryville College, please visit the MC website.

Business Office: Billing Statements

May Term bills will be e-mailed to students with payment due by May 1. Summer session bills will also be e-mailed to students with payment due by May 15. Student billing statements for Fall 2019 will be available via Self-Service in early July 2019. To ensure that registered courses remain active and to avoid a late fee, student accounts must be settled by Thurs., Aug. 1. Now is the time to enroll in the Monthly Payment Plan and divide tuition and other expenses into 12 (first payment on June 5) or 10 (first payment on Aug. 5) smaller monthly payments, spread over the school year. You can access the online financial aid system to see your specific financial aid package and cost worksheet.

Student Affairs: Packing Up and Moving Out

Residence Hall

The end of the semester brings the opportunity for students to officially move out of the residence halls. Students must either personally check out with a member of the hall staff or turn in their key in an express check-out envelope. All personal possessions must be removed from the room before a student can complete the check-out process. Improper check-out will result in a $25 fine. The check-out process is explained, in detail, on our website.

Residence halls close for underclassmen at 9 p.m. on Wed., May 1. Exceptions to this policy may be made on an individual basis by the Residence Life Office and will be subject to a $15 guest fee per night. All requests for exceptions must be made by 5 p.m. on April 22. Graduating seniors are allowed to stay in the residence halls until 9 a.m. on Sun., May 5. Seniors who are still on campus after 9 a.m. on Mon., May 6 will be charged an automatic $25 improper check-out fee, and an automatic express check-out will be assumed by the student at that point.

For more information, please visit the Maryville College website or call the Residence Life Office at 865.981.8192.

President's Office: Commencement Information

MC graduatesFor families of graduating seniors, the big day is quickly approaching. You can find information on the MC website, and as the event gets closer, the information will continue to be updated.

A Senior Picnic will be held at McArthur Pavilion on Fri., May 3 at noon. This is an opportunity for our graduating seniors to gather in fellowship before Commencement.

The Baccalaureate service for the Class of 2019 will be held on Sat., May 4 at 10 a.m. in the Ronald and Lynda Nutt Theatre of the Clayton Center for the Arts. Baccalaureate is often a moving and emotional experience for students and families, not to mention teachers and administrators. With the weight of worry about grades, college admissions, job searches and more lifted for most participants, relief and pride mix to create a lovely experience for everyone involved. Baccalaureate is a great opportunity to take family photos before the mad rush of graduation begins. Especially if everyone has put effort into looking nice, photos taken at Baccalaureate can be just as special as those taken with the graduate in his or her cap and gown on graduation day. If a family is fortunate enough to have a student speak at Baccalaureate, video is acceptable and encouraged in most situations. Watching your student and his or her classmates express emotions on this very special occasion is something no one will ever forget -- and something every student will be glad to revisit sometime in the future.

Academic Affairs: Academic Awards Ceremony

Academic Awards CeremonyThe annual Academic Awards Ceremony recognizes the outstanding academic achievement of Maryville College students. The ceremony is a formal affair with faculty, in academic regalia, and students seated on the stage. The academic dean, Dr. Daniel Klingensmith, presides, and academic division chairs present awards in their respective disciplines. In addition to individual academic awards, students are also recognized for membership in several academic honor societies. One senior, from among five nominees, is named the Alumni Association Outstanding Senior.

This year’s ceremony will take place on Sat., April 6 at 7 p.m. in the Clayton Center for the Arts’ Ronald and Lynda Nutt Theatre. Invitations are sent to students receiving awards; however, students do not know which award they will receive until the night of the ceremony.

Bicentennial: Buy Your Student "Noble, Grand, and True for Two Centuries"

Career Center: Important Information for Graduating Seniors

Career Center logoThe Maryville College Career Center is excited to learn about the plans of graduating seniors. Graduating students will be asked to take a survey, through Handshake, to report jobs, internships and graduate school plans for after graduation. The survey will be sent via email on April 12. Please encourage your student to provide feedback to the Career Center and report successes. If your student doesn’t have plans to work and intern this summer, please refer him or her to the Career Center for assistance. Don't forget -- the Career Center and its resources are still available to MC students after they graduate! On Thurs., April 11, over 50 employers will be at the Clayton Center for the Arts to network with graduating seniors. The event starts at 4 p.m., and students do not want to miss the opportunity to meet their future boss!
