RESPECT TM

FB44GP
MSRP: $560.00
ORIGIN: USA

The Spyderco Respect is a truly remarkable fixed-blade knife with a history that reaches back nearly 35 years to the very first American Bladesmith Society (ABS) “hammer-in” in 1985. Spyderco founder Sal Glesser participated in that landmark event and learned to forge blades under the watchful eyes of legendary master smiths Bill Moran, Don Hastings, and Bill Bagwell. Although he was already a Bowie enthusiast, Moran, Hastings, and Bagwell also gave Sal a graduate-level education in the lesser-known aspects of Bowie and big-knife design.

Inspired by that extraordinary experience, Sal was determined to design his expression of the perfect Bowie Knife. He started with a series of hand-drawn sketches to define the knife’s basic shape and size. He then put steel to wood and began carving full-scale models of it. With each one, he dialed in the details a little bit more, fine tuning the shape and balance of the design until he was satisfied with the result.

Although Sal completed the final wooden model decades ago and always intended to bring it to life as a hand-forged knife, his busy schedule never seemed to allow it. It wasn’t until Spyderco expanded its U.S. manufacturing facility in 2015 that he felt the time was right to express it as an American-made production knife.

Like the original design process, the prototyping and development of the knife was meticulous. Sal insisted on a thick spine to replicate the strength of a hand-forged knife, but with a wide blade profile to ensure superior edge geometry and a lively balance. He personally tested each successive generation of prototype, making subtle changes and adjustments until he knew he had it right. Only then was the design finalized and the aptly named “Respect” was born.

The Respect is an homage to the classic American Bowie Knife that also elevates its form by expressing it with state-of-the-art modern materials and manufacturing methods. The heart of the design is its blade, which is painstakingly crafted from CPM® 154 stainless steel. A powder metallurgy form of 154 CM—which was introduced to knifemaking by the legendary Robert W. Loveless—CPM 154 has an extremely homogenous microstructure and a uniform distribution of carbides throughout the steel. While it is easier to grind and polish than conventional ingot 154 CM, CPM 154 is significantly tougher, making it an ideal material for use in a Bowie blade.

For maximum strength, the Respect’s broad, satin-finished blade is an impressive .300-inch (7.6mm) thick at the spine and ricasso. However, because it is just over 1.5 inches (38.1mm) wide, its full-flat grind has plenty of room to taper uniformly to the edge, shedding excess weight while creating truly impressive blade geometry. The long, straight, double-beveled swedge on the back of the blade is unsharpened, but ensures a strong but acute point. A generous choil at the ricasso accentuates the knife’s classic style and allows the user’s index finger to wrap around the guard if desired to create a locked, reinforced grip. To proclaim the knife’s Spyderco pedigree, the blade also includes an understated Trademark Round Hole™ near the spine.

To protect the user’s hand, the Respect includes a precision machined stainless steel double guard that is meticulously press fitted to the tang and shoulders of the blade. The guard is held in place by contoured G-10 scales that have matching machined cavities to envelop the knife’s concealed tang. The mirror-image scales are secured by four sets of stainless steel Torx® screws, creating a near-seamless, one-piece feel in the hand that highlights the handle’s refined ergonomics. For those who prefer to outfit their knives with lanyards, the handle also includes a generously sized lanyard hole.

In keeping with its classic styling, the Respect comes complete with a premium-quality, handcrafted leather sheath that includes both a conventional belt loop and a brass stud. The stud serves double duty as a traditional snap closure for the sheath’s leather retaining strap and to prevent the knife from slipping down when it is worn using classic friction-style inside-the-waistband carry.

A knife truly deserving of its name, the Respect is a fitting tribute to the iconic American Bowie. More than three decades in the making, it also reflects the rich history of Sal Glesser’s evolution as a knifemaker and industry-leading designer.

AMSTERDAM MEET 2019

On March 16, Eric Glesser, Spyderco’s European Sales Representative Jurphaas Van Rietschoten, and select members of our Crew hosted the annual Spyderco “Meet” in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. A time-honored tradition, Spyderco Meets are truly unique events where we give a select group of knife enthusiasts an advanced look at some of our concept models and prototypes to gauge their responses and solicit feedback. To our knowledge, Spyderco is the only company in the knife industry to take this unique approach, which we have found to be incredibly beneficial to our product development and prioritization processes.

The 80 guests lucky enough to attend this year’s Meet got a rare glimpse of approximately 100 different knives slated for possible inclusion in Spyderco’s product line. Eric Glesser explained the history, logic, and inspiration of each design and encouraged participants to provide their honest feedback and opinions on comment cards.

While the attendees were in knife heaven, “SpyderCollector,” aka “Mr. Blonde,” a trusted friend of Spyderco, was busy photographing a select number of the knives shared at the Meet. His outstanding photos and written descriptions are featured on his web site and in one of the most popular threads on the Spyderco Forum.

We are extremely grateful to everyone who helped make the 2019 Amsterdam Meet such a great success and to all Spyderco fans for sharing in the excitement!

THE MURRAY CARTER COLLECTION

Nothing magnifies the skills of a chef more than extraordinary tools. And when it comes to kitchen knives, none are more extraordinary than those crafted by master bladesmith Murray Carter.

A native of Halifax, Canada, Carter fell in love with Japanese culture as a teenager. At age 18, he visited Japan and happened to meet Sensei Yasuyuki Sakemoto, a 16th-generation bladesmith whose lineage originated with some of the most revered sword makers of feudal Japan. Carter’s remarkable relationship with Sensei Sakemoto ultimately led to a demanding six-year apprenticeship and an additional 12 years of experience as a village bladesmith in Japan. After nearly two decades of dedicated study and total immersion in Japan’s knifemaking culture, Carter was honored to become heir to a 420-year-old family tradition as the 17th Generation Yoshimoto Bladesmith. He is also a Master Smith in the American Bladesmith Society and is recognized as one of the world’s leading experts on Japanese kitchen cutlery.

Although Carter is a prolific knifemaker with well over 25,000 custom blades to his credit, as a lone craftsman, he can never meet the bourgeoning worldwide demand for his elite handmade knives. To share his highly refined designs with a broader audience of cooking enthusiasts, he decided to partner with another legendary presence in the cutlery industry—Spyderco. In addition to producing a broad range of best-in-class cutting tools, like Carter, we have deep ties with Japan’s premier knifemaking resources.

Through an unprecedented collaboration, Spyderco has faithfully translated the meticulous craftsmanship and attention to detail of Carter’s exquisite handmade patterns to a breathtaking series of production knives known as the Murray Carter Collection.

Manufactured in Japan to Spyderco’s exacting quality standards, the Murray Carter Collection includes Carter’s highly refined expressions of five traditional Japanese kitchen knife patterns: Petty, Funayuki, Nakiri, Bunka Bocho, and Gyuto. Specifically chosen to excel at all types of food preparation, this formidable family of knives will be available in three different product tiers:

The elite Itamae (Chef) Series showcases stunning burl G-10 (a durable fiberglass and epoxy laminate) handles and three-layer laminated blades with a high-performance Aogami Super Blue steel core clad between layers of SUS410 stainless steel.

The Wakiita (Journeyman) Series features CTS® BD1N stainless steel blades and black G-10 handles.

The Minarai (Apprentice) Series also features CTS BD1N stainless steel blades, but with tough injection-molded synthetic handles.

Although tailored to fit the varying skills, goals, and budgets of different cooks, these elite knives all share the same proud lineage and uncompromising craftsmanship. Like Carter’s coveted handcrafted knives, their blades are painstakingly tempered and ground exceptionally thin to provide an unparalleled cutting experience.

The perfect synergy of time-honored tradition and state-of-the-art production methods, Spyderco’s Murray Carter Collection will set a new standard in kitchen cutting excellence.

204MF IN-LINE CHANGE

Spyderco will soon be implementing an in-line change in the safety rods of our Tri-Angle Sharpmaker®. Instead of brass, the rods will be made of an eco-friendly aluminum alloy. The specific alloy was chosen after extensive in-house testing to confirm that it was soft enough to “grab” blades that might slip off the ceramic stones during the sharpening process, while offering the necessary tensile strength. Sharpmakers outfitted with the new safety rods will begin shipping in early April.
