Paul Diston chosen to be Lib Dem candidate
Local campaigner Paul Diston has been chosen as the Lib Dem Focus Team candidate in Pelaw and Heworth for the local council elections taking place on Thursday, 2nd May.

Paul, who works as a warehouseman and has lived locally for over 20 years, said “I love our area and want to make it better. I have been working hard to get potholes fixed, carrying out litter picks and calling for more police resources for our area”.

Lib Dem Councillor Ian Patterson said “I have known Paul for many years and he will make a great Councillor. With Paul on the Council with me the Focus Team will be able to do even more for Pelaw, Heworth, Wardley and Bill Quay”.
Paul Diston hopes to join Councillor Ian Patterson on the Council in order to stand up for our area
Have your say on the proposed 20 mph zone for Heworth and Leam Lane
Gateshead Council are planning to introduce a 20mph zone in part of Heworth and Leam Lane. This will also involve introducing speed cushions and speed humps at various locations.

To give your views please respond to the public consultation which can be found here

The consultation closes on 5th April.
Lib Dem fight Labour's plans for tolls on the Tyne's bridges
Gateshead Lib Dems are opposing Labour's plans for road tolls across the Tyne's bridges.

Whilst we agree that it is vital to reduce air pollution, Labour’s plans will not achieve this and will harm Gateshead residents.

There are five main reasons for this:

  1. They discriminate against Gateshead residents, who cross the Tyne more than people from Newcastle
  2. They tax polluting and non-polluting vehicles alike, providing no incentive for people to switch to electric vehicles
  3. They will cost the average driver £17.00 a week, over £880 a year
  4. They will move pollution from the centre of Gateshead to the West where people will use non-toll roads such as Scotswood Bridge
  5. Other options to reduce congestion on Tyneside should be pursued.  These include allowing cars with passengers to share bus lanes, to work with employers to stagger opening times (e.g. have some major employers start work at 0800, others at 0900, others at 10.00), to improve public transport first and to introduce Park and Ride using swathes of derelict land in central Gateshead.
Council Tax Increase and Gateshead Council still charges the most!
Labour-run Gateshead Council have announced a 3.99% Council Tax increase this year, despite having the highest rates in Tyne and Wear.

Local people have been asking us "How do other Councils cost the taxpayer less than in Gateshead - but still provide a better service?". Lib Dem candidiate Paul Diston says "That's a good question and part of the problem is the amount of money that is wasted, such as the £700,000 they spent on a car park that hardly anyone uses (below), so we are challenging Labour on this".
Can you help the Focus Team do more for Pelaw & Heworth?
Ian, Paul, and the Focus Team work hard all year round and provide a regular newsletter, 'Focus on Pelaw & Heworth', to all households in the area. We rely on local residents to help deliver this. Would you be able to spare an hour or so every few months to deliver some newsletters near to where you live? If so, please get in touch by replying to this email.
