Dear Friends,

Today is the first day I have REALLY felt in my bones that spring is indeed coming (even though it's technically here). Sunshine and gentle breezes have a way of lifting your spirits after all the snow and ice. I hope you are finding a way to enjoy the moment!

This is a quick update to remind you that Gathering Sparks' Singalong Soirées are coming up in Elora and Toronto this weekend. Registration is open for summer ukulele classes at Haliburton School of the Arts.

My ukulele classes here in Toronto are in full swing and the ukulele orchestra is practicing for one or two appearances TBA.

Work is continuing on getting the new Gathering Sparks CD ready for release in the fall. More on that coming soon!

Until then, keep singing!

A Few of My Favourite Things

Ian Tamblyn on The Music Industry
The wonderful songwriter and performer Ian Tamblyn wrote an excellent article for the Roots Music Canada website about how challenging it is to make a living as a musician these days. Read it here.

Help Campus Radio Survive
The Conservative government here in Ontario is pushing a new initiative to make student fees at universities optional. This will have a huge impact on campus radio stations across the province, who depend on funding from students fees for their survival. Here's a recent CBC story about the issue. U of T's radio station CIUT is running a letter-writing campaign, encouraging listeners to show their support by contacting their local MP. Read a message from CIUT program director here, and click here to find contact information for your MP.

Loretta Lynn
This week I did a singalong presentation about women in music in the 1960's, which was a lot of fun to put together. I tried to include a variety of styles of music, from the Girl Groups of the early 60's, to singer-songwriters and rock musicians who came later in the decade. When I got to country music, I knew I had to include Loretta Lynn, who broke the mold in so many ways for women in country music by singing about real issues that women were facing in an honest and gutsy way. Here she is singing a hit song from 1967, "Don't Come Home A-Drinkin' (With Lovin' On Your Mind." Classic!
