20 – 22 March 2019 | JAKARTA, Indonesia South East Asia region has seen tremendous population increase to an estimated 660 million, with almost 50 percent of them living in urban areas. The situation has raised the number of private vehicle ownership, and eventually contributed to air pollution, traffic congestion and road accidents, all of which are the major concerns for sustainable urban development. To tackle the challenges, strategic responses such as systematic development of public transportation are required.   Click

Preparing Foundation for SDGs Flagship Project in Pakistan

16 - 18 March 2019 | ISLAMABAD, Pakistan – UCLG ASPAC and partner institutions in Pakistan are gearing up the preparatory work for a flagship initiative that will significantly accelerate the localisation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the country. “Localisation of SDGs” refers to a robust process of involving sub-national and local stakeholders in all SDGs-related work, ranging from setting priorities to developing plans, determining means of implementation, allocating resources as well as tracking progress. SDGs consist of 17 thematic Goals under the Global Agenda 2030, which serves as an overarching framework for countries to work towards long-lasting benefits of their citizens and global community as a whole. It is acknowledged that more than 65% of its targets must be implemented at local level. Without meaningful engagement with local governments, most if not all of SDGs will unlikely be achieved. Click
Fire Fighting Management: Reaping the Result, Expanding the Reach

Indonesia and India As one of the most disaster-prone regions, building city resilience is one of the priorities in Asia and the Pacific. Once resilience is enhanced, cities can also better pursue sustainable development and ensure that the outcomes will be protected in the future. UCLG ASPAC has been working with members and partners to enhance local governments’ capacity in this area. In 2018, UCLG ASPAC, in close collaboration with Seoul Metropolitan Government (SMG) and supported by the Ministry of Home Affairs of Indonesia (MoHA), jointly conducted training activities to enhance the capacity of local governments of seven cities in Indonesia on fire management. To capitalise on these fruitful outcome, UCLG ASPAC and SMG will further continue our collaborative efforts and expand the activities to other countries: India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Indonesia. 13 March 2019 | KATHMANDU, Nepal – The Prime Minister of Nepal K. P. Sharma Oli, officially endorsed UCLG ASPAC’s work on faecal sludge management and signed a plaque to express his support during a public event in Nepal, marking the 26th Establishment Day of the Municipal Association of Nepal (MuAN), UCLG ASPAC’s implementing partner of the project “Municipalities Network Advocacy in Sanitation in South Asia.” “This is a major achievement for the project,” said Ashok Kumar Byanju, MuAN’s President and Mayor of Dhulikhel Municipality and Co-President of UCLG ASPAC, after the MuAN Day event. “It is a significant endorsement to the work MuAN strongly believes in. Faecal sludge is now a growing problem to a large number of municipalities in Nepal and cities are least prepared on managing faecal sludge as they were more focused on being open defecation free,” added Kalanidhi Devkota, MuAN's Executive Director. Click
A Local Programme to Reduce Maternal Mortality

Good Practice | GORONTALO, Indonesia – With rapid social and economic development in Asia and the Pacific, who would have known that the average rate of maternal mortality in the region is still extremely very high compared with other parts of the world. According to the UN Populations Fund (UNFPA), around 127 mothers in the Asia-Pacific region die per 100,000 live births and 90% of these deaths could have been prevented. As worryingly, almost 92% of all maternal deaths in the region in 2015 occurred in only 12 countries, including Indonesia. Reducing maternal and newborn deaths is part of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Under SDG 3, all UN members have committed to ensure healthy lives and promote wellbeing for all at all ages. Countries have set a common target to reduce the global maternal mortality ratio to less than 70 per 100,000 live births by 2030. Click

Air pollution and greenhouse gas are labeled as the “slow killers,” with the former being the number four cause of children’s death (respiratory-related health problems) and the latter being produced by vehicles (as high as 30 per cent). Traffic congestion not only leads to loss of time and air pollution, it significantly consumes energy and hampers economic growth.
