Updates and News from College of Medicine and Healing Arts

Dear Valued Reader,

In Arabic, the word 'Salām' means peace, safety, and security.

There is a related word - Salīma - which has the same meaning, but also means complete, whole, and sound.  In Unani Tibb (Whole-Person Healthcare & Medicine), the word Salīma is part of the definition of positive health.

"Ṣiḥḥah – health is a dynamic condition of Iʿtidāl – balance in which all the Af ͑āl – functions are carried out in a Ṣaḥiḥa – correct and Salīma – whole manner."

This means that good health and peace are closely connected.

It is well known that stress is one of the biggest risk factors for heart diseases. Prolonged stress can cause, and also aggravates, all types of conditions, including life-threatening chronic illnesses.

If you have a Melancholic (cold and dry) or Choleric (hot and dry) temperament, you are especially vulnerable to the effects of stress - although no temperament is safe from its harmful effects.

Here are just some things that stress can do to you:

  • Turns off digestive system and immune system
  • Hinders sleep, growth and repair, sense of touch.
  • Increases blood pressure and blood thickness.
  • Increases build-up of toxic substances in your body.
  • Increases inflammation.
  • Decreases brain nutrients.
  • Leads to burn-out, anxiety and depression.

There are many causes of stress, but only one solution: peace.

As human beings, it is a core part of our purpose to maintain what is called in Arabic Qalb-Salīm, a sound, peaceful, and whole heart.

We know that when we are feeling peaceful, our body's 'rest-recover-repair' system is activated, helping to promote the following benefits:

  • Blood pressure normalises.
  • Nourishment and digestion takes place.
  • Heals and regenerates the body.
  • Rebuilds the body and stores nutrients
  • Increases immune activity, digestion, and urinary function.
  • Elimination of wastes.
  • Increases emotional wellbeing and healing.

So how do we overcome stress and it's negative effects, and instead live a peaceful, sound, and whole life? HINT: Forget about quick tricks or hacks - that's called 'quick-fix' which never really works.

The way to do this is to establish correct life balance and live a healthy lifestyle.  As taught and practised by generations of natural physicians, here are the things that will help heal you:

  1. Correct relationship with the environment and seasons
  2. Correct use of food and drink
  3. Correct balance of physical activity and rest
  4. Correct balance of psychological activity and rest
  5. Correct balance of sleep and wakefulness
  6. Correct balance of elimination and retention

So, if you want to reduce your risk of degenerative diseases, play a positive role in saving public health funds, and truly achieve peace and harmony in your life, the way to do this is to educate yourself (and practice what you learn) in these 6 areas.

Our in-person health education programme Foundation in Natural Health covers all of this in-depth, plus much more. There are no shortcuts, tricks, or hacks in the world that can replace this.
