Talk Abstracts, Speed meetings and more

Lineup

Previously on the Joy of Coding newsletter we introduced you to our first six speakers: Alan Richardson, Angie Jones, Leonie Watson, Martijn Verburg. We'll be updating you very soon on those last spots

Talk Abstracts

"When you already know how to code, it's easy to forget how hard some of that learning was... until you have to teach people. And if all you've ever built are applications, you don't know really know the nuances of writing code to automate them. And if you've written the code but never had to market the applications then you've not really experienced the full joy of coding.

In this presentation Alan Richardson will revisit many of his past projects to identify lessons learned. Lessons from: writing commercial and open source tools, multi-user adventure games, REST APIs, test automation, automating applications to make them do things they are not supposed to do, and coding for technical marketing.

Some lessons we will learn:

  • The 'install' is the hardest part
  • Writing frameworks is too much fun and should be banned
  • Applications are just "code calling other libraries"
  • Writing a Text Adventure s the most fun and educational thing you'll ever code
  • The Dangers of knowing how to code

We will also learn the dangers of knowing how to code and discover how our coding skills can give us an edge, in business and online live in general, if we choose to harness our skills to improve our daily experiences. "

Léonie Watson's talk is called Talking Technology: "We've been talking with technology for longer than you might think, but increasing conversational relatively few ways exist to help us make artificial speech sound human. Find out how to use Speech Synthesis Markup Language (SSML) with the Amazon Echo or Google Home, and the Web Speech API in the browser; how the CSS Speech module might be useful (if only it were more widely supported); and how we might be able to solve some problems by making things talk."

Tickets

The early birds have run out but we still have spots reserved for you so no worries get your tickets here

Submit a lightning talk

To everyone that already submitted a lighting talk, you are awesome! We got some very interesting talks submitted this year. Still we would like to make one final call to submit those lightning talks. It's fun to do and you'll get one free conference ticket as well. It's like infinite winning but so much better. Submit a five-minute lightning talk by 1 April 2019

Speed meeting

Whether you’ve never attended a developer conference before, or if you’ve been around the circuit for years, occasionally they can be a lonely experience.

Joy of Coding tries to remove that feeling with a session of Speed Meeting. In this session you will introduce yourself to several other conference attendees in short introductions of a few minutes each. In this introduction you are invited to talk with one other participant about who you both are, and why you are here.

There’s no need to prepare yourself, as it’s all very informal. But the end result should be that you will know several persons at the conference, even when you knew nobody at all beforehand. And who knows what this networking session will result in? It might just be a few persons you feel comfortable talking to, or it might be the beginning of a new friendship or even working relation!
