Womxn's Herstory Month
Welcome students, faculty, staff, y amigxs to the seventh edition of the monthly Aliento e-updates for this academic year!
We want to give a big thank you to Aliento student Gabriela Pineda and her cousin Gilbert Gonzalez for the design of the Aliento logo used in our header! Gabriela is also taking shirt orders with this logo. Please email gabriela.hassan@pepperdine.edu for more information.
Each month we provide updates, links, community events and resources while highlighting a mental health cause. This issue focuses on womxn's herstory month within the Latinx community.

A Tribute to the Women In Our Lives

Please note: The audio for this video is in Spanish.
We would like to make space to honor the women in all of our lives, our mamas, abuelitas, tias, hermanas and primas. They are, and have been, the doctors, engineers, historias, chefs, teachers and therapists of our families and community, and keep the cultura alive. Gracias!
Below, Aliento students Fabiola and Angie honor women in their family.
This is my Abuelita Rosa. She has been through so many hardships in her life, including a life-threatening accident and the death of two husbands and her son, yet she remains strong, positive, and with an open heart. She is a true symbol of resilience. -Angie
This is my prima Stephanie & Tia Chayo. They have both been prime examples and role models in my life to be who you want to be and do what you want to do - shamelessly. I have memories of my Tia Chayo singing and dancing in the living room or the dance floor at parties even when no one else was - because she wanted to. Steph shaved her head because it felt more authentic to who she was at the time - because she wanted to. - Fabi

Highlighting the Work of Women of Color

Women made history during the 2018 midterm elections. Congress now includes women of color, including Latina, Black, Native American and Muslim women, LGBT women, and women who are mothers of small children.

Yalitza Aparicio made history as the first indigenous woman to be nominated for an Oscar. She is originally from Oaxaca, Mexico and of Mixtec and Triqui descent.

Palabras from our Director

"You will not always be able to solve all of the world's problems at once, but don't ever underestimate the importance you can have. History has shown us that courage can be contagious and hope can take on a life of its own." - Michelle Obama
