CONGRATULATIONS & THANK YOU!

To organiser John Bentley and Volunteers from local Friends groups: RBG Melbourne, RBG Cranbourne, Melton BG and Ballarat BG for contributing time and funds towards AAFBG's stand at the Melbourne International Flower & Garden Show on 27-31 March.  Thank you also to those who sent material to promote their Friends group and Gardens. It was a huge success!  Visitors from all over Australia and overseas were shown "We are all Friends". See photos below, courtesy of John Bentley and Alex Smart.  A more comprehensive summary will appear in "Eucalypt" soon.

AAFBG Biennial Conference

Friday 22 - Sunday 24 May 2020

We hope you can join us in Queensland next year.  Hosted by Friends of Brisbane Botanic Gardens & Sherwood Arboretum, the theme of the next AAFBG Conference will link in with the 250 year anniversary of the Endeavour expedition 1768-1771, celebrating in particular the works of Swedish naturalist Daniel Solander.

Southern Highlands Botanic Gardens is a young BG at Bowral needing much support to bring their fantastic concept plans to fruition, the next of which is an Education Centre.  Attached is information about their current fundraising appeal.  Perhaps you know someone who lives in, or has an interest in, the area who could provide their support.

"Feeding the Birds" by Prof Darryl Jones

Darryl Jones is fascinated by bird feeders, not the containers but the people feeders.  He will engage us in fascinating stories dashed with humour of stories about the people who fill the containers, scatter the crumbs or seeds, or leave the picnic scraps behind for the birds.

Darryl will raise our awareness of the things we don't yet know and why we really should.

Author of The Birds at My Table his book describes all this activity as an unplanned ecological experiment on an unbelievably large scale whilst drawing on his impressive knowledge of the latest scientific findings as well as his own personal knowledge, to reflect and explain the modern practice of bird feeding.

Do you like quirky attire? See if you can outdo Darryl with your own 'bird themed' attire.

Rose Collections Survey

A letter from BGCI.  This type of survey could be useful for your group.

Dear all,

Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI) coordinates the International Plant Sentinel Network (IPSN) which facilitates collaboration between botanic garden & arboreta and plant protection organisations, more information can be found at http://www.plantsentinel.org/.

We are currently carrying out a research project in collaboration with the UK’s Food and Environment Research Agency (Fera) to assess the distribution of Rose Rosette Virus and we are asking gardens to survey their Rose collections for symptoms of this disease.  I am attaching a survey form and would be most grateful if you could complete this form and return it to me. Please also see the attached poster for further information on Rose Rosette Virus and symptom ID help. You may want to display this poster in appropriate locations in your garden to enable staff members and the public to report potential symptom sightings to the relevant person (to be detailed on the poster).

Please could you return your completed form to me at-  kate.marfleet@bgci.org. If symptoms have been observed we would very much like to obtain samples for testing. If that is the case we will then send you instructions on how to collect and send your samples.

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Best wishes,

Katie Marfleet
