1. Updates

Week 12

Hello Urbanists! The biggest news this week, of course, is Oxford's plan to become the UK's first city to install so-called 'bouncenators' - effectively trampoline-like devices designed to generate electricity through use. If you'd like to read more about these symbols of 'naïve urbanism', scroll down to the news section below.

Read on for news on self-healing concrete, opportunities to attend conferences and a summer course on global leadership for the future of cities, events happening from Oxford to Singaporeand much much more.

This week, we're giving a warm welcome to the newest member of our team, Mahak Agrawal, who is our new South Asia Coordinator. An urban planner and researcher from India, Mahak is currently working on the issue of sanitation deprivation and climate change response across coastal districts of India, and has served as an expert reviewer to the Second Order Draft of the IPCC Special Report on Climate Change and Land. Welcome, Mahak!

As always, please do send in your pictures and work -  we'd love to feature them in our newsletter. Head over to Facebook, Twitter, and our website pages for more updates.

2. Urbanist News around the World

  • China's 'Silk Road urbanism' is changing cities from London to Kampala – can locals keep control? (The Conversation)
    • 'Silk road' because of its description of the growth of infrastructural corridors, but also because of this article's overwhelming focus on China - an interesting, if slightly finger-pointing, piece
  • Next Up in Amsterdam's War on Cars: Kill 1,500 Parking Spaces a Year (CityLab)
    • More space for bikes?
  • Toronto by public transportation - from Point A to anywhere (Medium)
    • On the Toronto Transit Explorer, giving Dora a run for her money
  • The smart cities of the future are already taking off (Singularity Hub)
    • 'self-healing concrete' and 'self-charging windows' - need I say more?
  • Intimate infrastructures: (dis)connected cities and violence against women (King's College London)
    • On a research project exploring the link between infrastructure and violence through a focus on women in Indian cities, and their connections and disconnections with various infrastructures - an easy and enlightening read.
  • Why the world's recycling system stopped working (Financial Times)
    • Perhaps a little grandiose to suggest that there was previously a 'system' in place, but this is a very informative article on what China's refusal of refuse reveals about flows of waste worldwide
  • Paul Cheshire on urban economics (The Unassuming Economist)
    • On why “land is making a comeback”, reasons for the dramatic turnaround in the value of land, the “key tools in the urban policy box”, and other things I previously hadn't a clue about
  • Naïve urbanism 'springs' into action in UK city (Lirpa Digest)
    • Really? Trampolines on every street corner in Oxford? Happy April Fools' Day.
