Welcome to our 2019 Easter Newsletter, we hope everyone is enjoying the year so far.
Asbestos awareness is key to ensuring the health and safety of everyone, we will be providing some general information about some of the more common asbestos containing materials (ACM) found in our community in our newsletters. Our first material is asbestos cement found in many building and decorative products throughout residential, commercial and industrial properties.

Asbestos cement products are relatively common in New Zealand in commercial and residential settings. It was typically used for roofing and cladding but had many other applications.
Cement-based sheets and planks that were installed before 1988 and have a corrugated profile or a dimpled back surface are likely to contain asbestos. Generally, if the material is in good condition it is unlikely to release fibres or pose a significant health risk. However, if the material is disturbed by cutting, drilling, water-blasting etc high levels of airborne fibres may be released, representing a serious health risk.

CES has recently been involved in a few unfortunate situations where home owners have engaged workers who have not correctly identified asbestos cement and have proceeded to disturb the material. If you are unsure if a material contains asbestos it is best to get it tested – samples can be dropped off to our lab or couriered in. Please ensure all samples are double bagged and sent with a sample submission form. If you are concerned about your exposure to asbestos, CES has competent and Worksafe licenced Assessors who can conduct air monitoring and sampling for airborne asbestos fibres.

Workplace Exposure Monitoring
CES provides IANZ accredited gravimetric analysis and equipment for clients. We provide basic sampling equipment instruction however we do not provide training or carry out workplace exposure monitoring and recommend that a competent person is engaged to conduct monitoring. Work Safe New Zealand provides lots information about exposure monitoring on their website.
