World-renowned scientist to visit Southland
Professor Robert Costanza, from the Australian National University, is visiting New Zealand next week to work with Environment Southland and the Catchments Otago Research Theme on different approaches to regional and national water challenges.
On Monday night (8 April) he’ll give a public talk on ‘Treating our societal addiction to growth’. Professor Costanza will discuss how societies - like individuals - can become addicted to patterns of detrimental and unsustainable material consumption and how addiction based therapies can offer communities solutions for alternative futures.
Professor Costanza is a world leader in ecological economics, where his research integrates the study of humans and the rest of nature. This work addresses research, policy and management issues, from small river catchments to the global system.
While in New Zealand, he is leading a solutions-focused workshop in Invercargill and giving public talks in both Invercargill and Dunedin (10 April). Each event is free to attend. All welcome.
Where: Hansen Hall, Southern Institute of Technology, Invercargill
