Sustainability is a cross-curriculum priority and connects to a range of actions and learning opportunities linked to both the Early Years Learning Framework and the Australian Curriculum. Before we can embed sustainability we must first learn, then live and teach it to others.
The EESSA Inc conference Learn It, Live It, Teach It ….. Embedding Sustainability provides an opportunity for educators across all career levels to build their knowledge and skills, and to explore ideas from key advocates in education for sustainability.
Join us as we explore:
- What is Education for Sustainability and why is it important in the early years?
- Environmentally Responsible: beyond a duty, a paradigm shift
- Saving the world with gardening
- Indigenous perspectives on sustainability
- Pecha Kucha style provocations - why education for sustainability and EfS in practice
The initial conference will be followed by two smaller events to further grow your knowledge and skills. These sessions will involve a focus on case studies of best practice in embedding sustainability and planning and teaching sustainability.
This conference addresses:
- Australian Professional Standards for Teachers: Standard 1.3, Standard 1.5, Standard 2.4, Standard 4.1, Standard 6.2, Standard 7.4
- All 5 learning outcomes of Belonging, Being and Becoming: The Early Years Learning Framework, in particular Outcome 2 and Outcome 3.

World Bee Day - 20th May 2019
World Bee Day is officially recognised by the United Nations (UN) and the inaugural World Bee Day was on 20 May 2018. The initiative was supported by all UN states, while 115 countries also acted as co-sponsors, including Australia.
As an international day world bee day acknowledges the role of bees and other pollinators for the ecosystem. Pollinators are essential for food security and critical to conserving biodiversity.
Bees are under threat worldwide due to our increasing urbanisation and removal of natural habitat and the increasing use of pesticides in agriculture. Australia is home to a vast array of bees. Native bees are important pollinators of Australia's unique wildflowers and are a vital part of our Australian bushland. Species include the tiny native honeybees and a variety of solitary bees -- blue banded bees, teddy bear bees, leafcutters and many more.
The majority of Australian bees are solitary bees which raise their young in burrows in the ground or in tiny hollows in timber, however, Australia also has 11 species of social native bees that are tiny (3 - 5 mm), black and stingless! Stingless beekeeping is increasing in popularity and stingless bee honey is a very yummy bush food. Unfortunately for us the stingless honey bees are tropical and only live in warmer parts of Australia so are not native to South Australia. What you can find in SA are Blue Banded bees Teddy Bear bees, Green carpenter bees, Masked bees, Carpenter bees, Redd bees and more.
It is easy to create a habitat for native bees with reed houses, wood blocks, mud or rammed earth.

Earth hour
Did you remember Earth Hour Sat March 30th? If yes congratulations.
If no don’t worry, set a time to have your own earth hour (or two). You can make this a weekly or monthly event by turning off the lights, TV computer etc. Gather as a family and use the time to explore with the family, including young children, why you are doing it. Ask them to reflect on some questions like: where does electricity come from? what happens if you don’t have any? What are the other sources of energy? And how can we use these? Make it a techno free event to utilise everyone’s creativity and problem-solving skills.
