Learn. Plan. Act.
Last week, March 25th-29th was National Stand-Up for Grain Safety Week. A week focused on safety allows the grain industry to work closely and collaboratively using three simple steps to promote grain safety:
Learn-Plan-Act

MAC participation provided an opportunity to focus on the plans that are in place at every location to manage our facilities in case of an emergency. A disorganized evacuation can result in confusion, injury, and additional damage. By practicing our Emergency Action Plan, we are able to ensure a safer environment for employees, customers and visitors if an emergency situation were to arise.

Breckenridge: Breckenridge conducted a fire drill evacuation at each of the three locations. Downtown and Wheeler both practiced managing a small fire that could be handled without calling emergency services. Ransom Rd practiced an unmanageable fire that would require complete evacuation and contacting emergency services to handle the situation.

Marlette / Brown City : The Marlette group participated in a drill simulating an arc flash explosion and fire which resulted in two injuries. The Brown City drill simulated a gas leak and explosion which caused three injuries.

Middleton:  The spring breakfast in Middleton was a great opportunity to discuss safety topics. Information included importance of  cleanliness and hand-washing especially after dealing with chemicals, understanding signal words on labels, and lawnmower safety such as avoiding giving children rides. After the breakfast, 17 employees participated in a tornado drill. Meeting location is in the basement, but the group also discussed safe and unsafe places in the plant to go if a tornado popped up unexpectedly.

Newaygo:  Newaygo ran a mock tornado drill, with a meeting location under the plant in the basement. The group even included a trucker who was on site and joined in!

Each of these drills was designed to be a real-life scenario to prepare for an unexpected emergency. All who participated were able to get questions answered so we are prepared. Safety drills are important activities so we are able to manage a situation safely.

We hope we never have to implement these plans, but our employees are prepared if it ever becomes necessary. We work hard to ensure our facilities are safe for all those who come onto the premises. If you have questions about these procedures or what to do if you were loading or unloading at MAC and an emergency occurred, please speak to the location manager. We would also be happy to help offer tips to keep your farm safe, too!

We're pleased to have the support of Stand Up for Grain Safety Week from the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development by way of proclamation from Director Gary McDowell. Read all about it here.
Thanks to all the organizations who sponsored this week to bring a focus on grain safety:
