A word from EFTA's NEW President

Dear EFTA colleagues and friends,
I am writing this at a time of great hope and despair, the hope for the future is that one 16-year-old Swedish schoolgirl can inspire over a million and a half schoolchildren in 100 countries to strike for the climate of the earth on Fridays for Future. The majority of the children striking, and marching do not have the possibility to vote. In a previous newsletter our past president Professor Maria Borcsa called for systemic and family therapists to use their voting power to elect politicians who espoused the values of inclusivity, tolerance and diversity. I am echoing that call and adding use your voting power in the upcoming European elections to do what our young people are asking of us, save the climate.
The despair is that as I am writing this news of the latest violent attacks on public populations going about their daily lives is emerging on two continents. It seems that the issues in our time for families is increasingly measured in their levels of trauma and vulnerability. Europe as a whole is in danger of becoming desensitized to the issues of famine, war displacement and violence the effects of which can appear in our therapy rooms and in the lives of our students and colleagues.
It is during times like these that we need a focal point for our field. The EFTA -SIPPR Naples conference 11th – 14th September will allow us to explore these issues. Our past President Rodolfo de Bernart was acutely aware of the impact of societal change on the work and field of psychotherapy. This is why our conference themes are oriented towards exploring these hypermodern times.
Our four themes of Change in relationships, change of tools practices and procedures, change of requests and change of contexts will allow us to explore the creative responses that our field is developing. The preparations for the congress are well underway with President Rossella Aurilio leading the work of our Italian partners in the conference SIPPR. EFTA is a multi-language organisation and our conference will reflect this with access to translation in Keynote presentations, our plenaries and workshops will be grouped by theme and language. The deadline for abstract submission is April 15, please take time to visit the website and read the weekly news updates from the conference.

Chers Collègues et Amis d'EFTA,
J'écris ces mots à une époque de grand espoir et de désespoir. Notre espoir pour l'avenir est qu'une écolière suédoise de 16 ans puisse inspirer plus d'un million et demi d'écoliers de 100 pays à lutter pour le climat de la Terre tous les vendredis. La majorité des enfants en grève et en marche n'ont pas la possibilité de voter. Dans une précédente lettre d'information, notre ancienne présidente, la professeure Maria Borcsa, avait appelé les thérapeutes systémiques et familiaux à utiliser leur droit de vote pour élire des politiciens qui adhéraient aux valeurs d'inclusion, de tolérance et de diversité. Je fais écho à cet appel et j'ajoute l'utilisation de votre pouvoir de vote lors des prochaines élections européennes pour faire ce que nos jeunes nous demandent, pour sauver le climat.
Le désespoir est que, au moment où j'écris ces nouvelles, les dernières attaques violentes contre des populations publiques se livrant à leur vie quotidienne émergent sur deux continents. Il semble que les problèmes de notre époque pour les familles se mesurent de plus en plus au niveau de leurs traumatismes et de leur vulnérabilité. L’Europe, dans son ensemble, risque de devenir insensible aux problèmes de famine, de déplacements dus à la guerrre et de violences dont les effets peuvent apparaître dans nos salles de thérapie et dans la vie de nos étudiants et de nos collègues.
C’est durant de telles périodes que nous avons besoin d’un point focal pour notre domaine. La conférence EFTA-SIPPR qui se tiendra à Naples du 11 au 14 septembre nous permettra d’explorer ces questions. Notre président sortant Rodolfo de Bernart était profondément conscient de l'impact du changement de société sur le travail et le domaine de la psychothérapie. C'est pourquoi les thèmes de notre conférence sont orientés vers l'exploration de ces temps hyper-modernes.
Nos quatre thèmes: changement de relations, changement d'outils, de pratiques et de procédures, changement de demandes et changement de contextes nous permettront d'explorer les réponses créatives développées par notre champ. Les préparatifs du congrès vont bon train et la présidente Rossella Aurilio dirigera les travaux de nos partenaires italiens lors de la conférence SIPPR. L’EFTA est une organisation multilingue et notre conférence le reflétera avec un accès à la traduction dans les présentations principales. Nos plénières et ateliers seront regroupés par thème et par langue. La date limite pour la soumission des résumés est le 15 avril. What I liked the most in Rodolfo, was the elegance with which he used to absorb the conflict.
It was not possible to have a conflictual relationship with him and it was impossible to
drag him into any interaction in which others were in conflict. Rodolfo had the ability to refrain from reacting to provocations and a gift for finding the conciliatory gestures necessary to defuse any argument...

Ce que j’aimais le plus chez Rodolfo, était l’élégance avec laquelle il absorbait le conflit.
Il n’était pas possible d’avoir une relation conflictuelle avec lui, et il était également impossible de l’entrainer dans une interaction où d’autres se trouvaient en conflit. Rodolfo avait le don de ne jamais réagir aux provocations en trouvant toujours la brèche conciliante qui aidait à apaiser les tons....

Rodolfo was a very creative therapist and trainer in Family Therapy, well known for his commitment to the promotion of using Images as a means for change.
He was a beloved teacher and mentor - his contributions in his native Italy, in Europe and beyond are incalculable.
A man of culture, charm and taste - one who befriended everyone, always remaining accessible, warm and entertaining....

C’est avec une grande tristesse que nous avons été informés du décès d’Eric Louis (Suisse).
Eric faisait partie de l’EFTA depuis de très nombreuses années. Après avoir été membre du Conseil d’Administration et Trésorier Général, en 2007, il avait reçu une récompense pour sa contribution exceptionnelle au développement de l’EFTA, et spécifiquement pour son travail au sein de la Chambre des Associations Nationales EFTA NFTO. Dès 2013 il était devenu Vice - Président de la Chambre des Membres Individuels EFTA CIM, et ce n’est qu’en février 2018, à peine franchi le cap de ses 90 années, qu’il a manifesté, malgré son désir de maintenir son rôle précieux de conseiller expérimenté, le besoin de s’arrêter.
Sa présence, son dynamisme, sa force et son courage, et surtout son expression, toujours souriante, vont profondément nous manquer.
Nous présentons nos sincères condoléances à sa famille et à ses proches. Son souvenir restera dans nos cœurs.

It is with great sadness that we have been informed of the death of Eric Louis (Switzerland).
Eric has been a member of EFTA for many years. After being a member of the Board and Treasurer General in 2007, he received an Award for his outstanding contribution to the development of EFTA, and specifically for his work in the EFTA NFTO Chamber. In 2013 he became Vice President of the Chamber of Individual Members EFTA CIM, and it was not until February 2018, just over 90 years, that he demonstrated, despite his desire to maintain his valuable role of experienced counselor, the need to stop.
His presence, his dynamism, his strength and his courage, and especially his expression, always smiling, will be deeply missed.
We offer our sincere condolences to his family and loved ones. His memory will remain in our hearts.

EFTA Book Series update
EFTA Book Series published by Springer International is developing into a major resource for European family therapy. There have been more than 8000 downloads from Volume 1 Origins and Originality in Family Therapy and Systemic Practice Maria Borcsa and Peter Stratton (Eds) https://www.springer.com/de/book/9783319390604. Volume 2 edited from Norway by Terje Tilden and Bruce E. Wampold surveyed different approaches to Routine Outcome Monitoring in Couple and Family Therapy: The Empirically Informed Therapist https://www.springer.com/gp/book/9783319506746 . Volume 3 from Roberto Pereira and Juan Luis Linares report a range of European Clinical Interventions In Systemic Family And Couple Therapy. https://www.springer.com/gp/book/9783319785202 .
The next two volumes are progressing towards publication. Volume 4 is by Matthias Ochs, Maria Borcsa, & Jochen Schweitzer (Eds.) International Perspectives On Systemic Research – Linking Research And Practice and is based on the important Heidelberg research conference in which EFTA played a large part. Volume 5 edited by Angela Abela, Suzanne Piscopo and Sue Vella in Malta is Couple Relationships in a Global Context: Understanding love and intimacy across cultures. GERMANY: Important step: Approval of Systemic Therapy by the German government
On 22 November 2018, Systemic Therapy for adults was approved by the German government as “useful” and “medical necessary” – what means, that ST will get paid by the official health insurances in the ambulant psychotherapeutic care. This is for us in Germany a very huge step – we fought for that now for nearly 20 years!: Read more (in German).
