Community Conversations and Pledges of Action

It's been days since CMPD released the bodycam footage of the moments before the death of Danquirs Franklin. Since Monday's release, city leaders and local groups have gathered for community conversations and peaceful protests calling for accountability and unity.

CMPD Chief Kerr Putney said he hopes to provide the results of the internal investigation to the district attorney's office as early as next week. Then, it would take another six to eight weeks for the DA to decide whether to press charges against Officer Wende Kerl. Meanwhile, the mayor has said that more funds need to go toward outreach programs that address issues like gun violence and conflict resolution.

At a Stop the Violence rally hosted by the local branches of NAACP and Hip Hop Caucus, speakers noted how mentally taxing incidents like this are for people of color.

"At some point, we have to stop begging for our humanity. At some point, our humanity has to be acknowledged," said Justin Perry, therapist and community organizer.
