Issue 41

April 28th, 2019

Hello Dear Guildies,

We all love our craft but we also know that new fabric lines are released faster than we can sew, scraps tend to accumulate and it is becoming more and more difficult to ignore the impact of our consumption on the environment.  Last week was Earth Day.  Our planet is beautiful and provides us with so many resources, we need to protect it.  Our Programming team has gathered sustainable projects that will help us be more responsible quilters.  Don't miss this week's meeting if you want to be inspired.

Speaking of meeting, there's a change of date for the August meeting.  It will be held on August 14th, at the Sewing Studio.  Mark your calendars!

The Member roster is going out on Sunday (after this Newsletter) to our members.  We would greatly appreciate if you could check your details and communicate with us anything that needs to be changed.

Finally, keep an eye on your email box: if you have registered to any of the Interest Groups, you will soon be contacted by group's leader.

If you have questions, comments, or suggestions regarding the newsletter, please email me. I would also love to hear of any quilty news or ideas for content you'd like to share.  Constructive feedback is always welcome.

Happy stitching,

Caroline Garnier
Secretary

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

Call for Blocks:  We have a new blog post about the block we will be using for Calls for Blocks this year.  It is the Road to Tennessee block.  All the information you need can be found on the blog.  We really appreciate any blocks contributed as it allows us to quickly respond to any call for quilts or blocks when tragedy happens.

Heather Wilkie, the Executive Director for the Zebra Coalition, will be giving a short presentation on who the Zebra Coalition is and how they support the LGBTQ+ community.  We will be having a sign up for any guild members that would like to be apart of a team to create a twin size quilt for the Zebra Coalition.

In addition, at our May meeting, we will also have sign up for subcommittees for the Festival of Trees and QuiltCon Charity quilt.  In the past, these quilts have been a wonderful way for our guild to contribute to our community.

The guild is helping UCF finish a few quilts for their Pulse remembrance ceremony in June. If anyone can help bind a quilt, please see Kelly. The quilts are about 30x40 and we have the materials. We have a short deadline as they are due June 4.

Thanks! Kelly

EDUCATION
Alissa Lapinsky

We still have a couple of spaces for Giucy Giuce's class on June 9th.  If you haven't registered yet, make sure you get in touch with Alissa.  Payment for the class holds your spot, so don't forget your check book.  In order to make thing easier, Alissa will order the kits in bulk, so make sure you have payment for the kit too.

HIGHLIGHT MEMBER

We don't have a Member spotlight this month, but I encourage you to go back to all previous great stories our members shared with us.  There's a special page on the blog.

QUILTY HAPPENINGS
Locally, Globally, and on the Web

  • The Quilting Community has lost a Great Lady, Gwen Marston has passed away.  Over the last 30 years she has taught and had an impact on both traditional and modern quilters.  We do have 2 books from Gwen in our library, check them out if you want to explore Gwen's work.  You can also listen The Crafty Planner podcast with Gwen.
  • We are creating a new tab on the blog: SWAPS & QAL.  Soon you will find a list of Swaps and Quilt Along to follow.  Please do not hesitate to email Alejandrina if you know of any that should be added to the list.
  • Speaking of Quilt Along, Carolyn Frielander is launching a Quilt Along for her Hunt quilt pattern, on May 2nd.  Check her Newsletter.
  • For all the Kaffe Fassett lovers out there, it looks like the fashion industry is catching up with the quilting world:  Coach designer, Stuart Vevers got his inspiration from Kaffe Fassett's love for colour (see this article).   But we all knew, long before the Calvin Klein campaign (remember the white and red quilt and the Kardashian), that quilts were way cooler than any fashion fad.  For a bit of humor go and read Mary Fons' article on the use of quilts in the Calvin Klein add.
  • On the subject of sustainability, the Boulder Modern Quilt Guild has posted some articles about the subject here, here, here.

Thank you for being a part of The Orlando Modern Quilt Guild.  We appreciate you taking the time to read our newsletter and hope you find it as interesting as we do!
