It’s Incredible What Your Clients Won’t Tell You – Market Research

… but if you could listen to their hidden conversations, you might be amazed at what you discover

by Kurian M. Tharakan

Author’s note: This was one of the most profoundly insightful client engagements that I have had. It was clear that a 2-year investment in the strategy was not ever going to work — the answer why was hidden in plain sight. They just needed to ask.

Recently I was called to advise a technology company (TC) on a thorny problem. TC sold their product through a value-added reseller (VAR), who would then add it to their technology platform to provide a customized solution to their business customers. This relationship effectively made the VAR, and specifically their sales team, TC’s only real client. Unless the VAR generated sales at the retail level, TC’s product would sit idle on their shelves.

… all failed to deliver significant sales.

TC had signed the VAR agreement almost two years earlier, but now with the anniversary date of the contract approaching, it was readily apparent that the VAR’s sales team had generated no significant sales. Multiple tactics to prod the VAR to sell the product had been tried.  Generous product margins, salesperson contests and spiffs, as well as high budget marketing promotion and support, had all failed to deliver significant sales. Everyone blamed the “lazy” sales team.

Sprout Fund completes close of inaugural $1 million early stage tech fund

Sprout Fund is bringing new partners into the market who have not traditionally invested in early stage technology companies.

Edmonton, Alberta – March 26, 2019

Sprout Fund has successfully raised $1 million for its inaugural early stage technology fund. The fund’s strategy is to focus on early stage technology companies led by exceptional teams and leverage the collective capital of its Limited Partners for further investment into companies. “We have attracted capital from a significant group of highly successful investors throughout Alberta,” said Lindsay Dodd, one of four Sprout Fund Managing Partners, “many of whom see this as a smart way to start investing in Canadian technology companies and to help diversify the economy.”

Alberta company wins NASA tech competition with 3D ‘Star Trek’ surgery

NEWS: EDMONTON INVENTORS COME UP WITH WHAT SOME HAVE DUBBED 'STAR TREK SURGERY'X

An “immersive reality” product developed in Edmonton has skyrocketed all the way to NASA. Aris MD recently took top prize in the U.S. space agency’s iTech Ignite the Night pitch competition in Austin, Texas.

They were the only Canadian competitors.

“And honestly, our stuff is the best.”

The Aris MD software turns conventional medical imaging — MRI, CT scan, x-ray — into 3D images. Physicians can wear smart goggles to view body structures from all angles and superimpose the images over a patient’s body on the operating table, like Star Trek surgery

2019 SingularityU Canada Summit - Canada’s Premier Innovation and Technology Summit is Coming to Alberta

About SingularityU
Singularity University (SU) was co-founded in 2008 at the NASA Research Park in Mountain View, California. They are not a “traditional academic university,” but rather a think-tank and an ecosystem of world- renowned technology experts, social entrepreneurs and leading futurists. SU help inform, inspire and transform individuals and organisations to create a more abundant future and shape our collective future.

About SingularityU Canada
SingularityU Canada is a Canadian not-for-profit that was founded in 2017 in an effort to bring this important global movement to Canada, a customizable platform for guided exploration. A forum that brings uncommon partners together to engage in strategic conversations about our (possible) future.

Change is happening at an accelerated rate. Many of the changes are a result of the exponential speed of technological advancement. The challenge with this kind of change is that once the underlying trajectories are obvious, it’s too late: the tipping point has been reached. Last year, organizations from the public and the private sector, from different industries and across the country - all came together to bring Singularity University to Canada. Our first Summit brought 1,300 leaders to Toronto for two days of strategic conversations about our collective future.

SingularityU Canada Summit
The 2019 SingularityU Canada Summit is taking place April 23 & 24 in Edmonton, Alberta.

The summit is devoted to reinforcing Canada’s global role as a key technological innovator. It aims to give a deeper understanding of how exponential technology will benefit nearly every aspect of our daily lives.

Attendees can listen to and participate in expert panel presentations and open discussions. Work and play with product demos that let you experience the future today. Meet like- minded forward-thinkers and join a growing network of thought leaders, trailblazing practitioners, and impact startups.

Tickets can be purchased from https://sucanada.org/summit2019/
