Vegan family hit a sweet spot with dairy free Mr Whippy alternative

If you're scrunching your face up at the thought of vegan soft serve, you best think again.
Vice Cream NZ is New Zealand's first 100 per cent dairy free soft serve truck, according to the owners.
The Queenstown-based business started the same way a lot of quirky Kiwi ventures do: On TradeMe.
"We found this really cool retro truck and were like 'should we do it? Let's do it'," says co-owner Hana Deavoll.
That was in December 2018. By February 2019, Vice Cream was up and running, tripping between the Remarkables Market, local sporting events, corporate shouts, and the New Zealand Golf Open.
Aside from being a fun side project, Hana and her husband Sam Deavoll run a construction company.
Hana says they're also hoping to "break those stereotypes" held by people who think "it's not ice cream if it doesn't have dairy in it".
Perhaps their greatest win has been doing exactly that.
"Even though it says on our truck 'the dairy free ice creamery', and on our menu it says '100 per cent dairy free and vegan', I still don't think a lot of people realise," she says.
Surprisingly, there's no top secret recipe that requires turning cashew nuts into soft serve or chia seeds into sorbet. The soft serve is made with coconut milk, and goes in the machine the same way any other Frosty Boy or Mr Whippy creation would.
Once it's in a cone, punters can pick from an assortment of vegan-friendly toppings.
While Vice Cream might be the only vegan ice cream "truck" in the NZ game, they aren't the only business making dairy free soft serve.
Auckland-based ice creamery Minty B have been running a similar operation since 2016, working out of a restored 1970s caravan.
In supermarkets, Halo Top, Little Island and So Good all offer dairy free ice cream options, and in February of this year, the first dairy-free Magnum was met with major fanfare from the vegan, lactose intolerant and health conscious alike.
Even ice cream stalwart Ben & Jerry's offers a selection of sickeningly decadent vegan ice creams.
For Hana, Vice Cream's purpose comes back to making environmentally-friendly food accessible.
She knows that if you put it in front of people they'll opt in, and if you don't, they won't.
"I think as people become more aware of environmental consequences of dairy… they'll start making more conscious choices. You can't be an environmentalist then go buy a dairy ice cream and cheese, because they contradict each other," she says.
It's no secret New Zealanders care about the environment. That fact makes Vice Cream's job simple - they're there to bring people's "actions in line with their values".
"If we can do our little part to make that easier for people, then that keeps us happy."
As summer fades to winter, the Deavolls already have their sights on Summer 2020.
The couple hoping to get some owner/operators on board, who would be willing to work out of "a shop, a cart or a caravan".
She'd also like to see Vice Cream in "all the major towns" across NZ, "so people can see it and head straight for it, because they know it's 100 percent dairy free".
"I wanna develop our own brand of ice cream too, so you can get it in supermarkets," Hana says.
"That's the big plan."

* Updated - see statement from Winton/Chris Meehan below.

The two hotels at the centre of recent resource consent battles have both been put on the market – before either is built.

Both properties were listed on the Australian specialist trading site The Hotel Page on March 13th – both with the price listed as “on application.”

The Northlake 113 room hotel has not been given resource consent yet and the Waterfall Park consent was only publicly published by media on March 14 – one day after the hotel was listed for sale on The Hotel Page.

The sale listing for Northlake includes the following details:

“• Freehold, 113 key, 4-Star hotel with full F&B offering.

• Queenstown Lakes District location; NZ’s adventure tourism capital.

• Gateway to Treble Cone and Cadrona* ski fields.

• Strong YoY occupancy and guest night growth.

• Offered for sale as a completed turn-key hotel.”

*Cardrona is wrongly spelt in the hotel listing – indicating a certain lack of local knowledge by the Auckland hotel broker Whillans.

The Waterfall Park Hotel sale ad features these details:

“• Freehold, 380 key, 4-Star+ hotel with full spa, wedding, conference and F&B offerings.

• Exceptional waterfall setting adjacent to two world-class golf courses.

• Less than 15 minutes to the International Airport.

• One of the strongest hotel markets in Asia Pacific.

• Offered for sale as a completed turn-key hotel.”

Wakatipu High School student Sarah Saint-Pere has produced a comprehensive video documentary covering the students climate march last month. Here's Sarah's introduction:

My intention behind this video was purely to document our local experience of the worldwide student-led climate strike; capturing both positive and negative views on it, as well as the community’s genuine, raw reactions and feelings towards the movement, all in the perspective of a local student.

Introducing the purpose and significance of the strike itself as well as its origins in the beginning of the video, I hoped to raise awareness about the importance of the strike started by Greta Thunberg, while also discussing her motivations.

Queenstown has a close-knit community. I think it’s safe to say that we all kind of expected a participatory group primarily consisting of just high school students, but we were pleasantly surprised to find that quite a number of parents, locals and even primary school kids came and joined us. The turn-out was pretty impressive. Hence, I certainly felt our voices were heard and acknowledged. Parading through the streets and pier, hearing the applause and cheers from complete strangers was heart-warming. The support was refreshing, especially after a negative interaction with a member of the public halfway through the march.

We hope that by seeing the youth having their voices and presence proudly represented on screen, students at our school will feel more encouraged to keep raising the issue and demanding change. After all, climate change is not going to stop if we keep going at the rate we are right now.

Imagine jet-setting into Queenstown, jumping on a mountain bike and heading east through Cromwell, Alexandra, Roxburgh, Beaumont and Waihola - before boarding a plane again at Dunedin Airport.

Central Otago’s big $26.3 million bike trail network, when it is completed, will link four ‘Great Rides’ - (Queenstown Trail, Otago Central Rail Trail, Roxburgh Gorge Trail and Clutha Gold Trail) to create a whole new ‘Great Ride.’

The project is being overseen by the Central Otago Queenstown Trail Network Trust, and the start is underway - linking the Otago Central Rail Trail at Clyde with Cromwell.

Stage two involves a new trail through the Kawarau Gorge that will link with the existing Queenstown Trail on the Gibbston back road.

Queenstown Trails Trust chief executive Mark Williams said the feasibility work had already been done, including detailed engineering design around some of the trickier sections.

He said it may be that platforms would have to be built around some of the bluff sections - much like what was in place on the Roxburgh Gorge Trail.

Stage five of the project would eventually link the existing track at Pisa Moorings with the Luggate track south of Wanaka - which then crosses over onto another ‘Great Ride’ the Alps 2 Ocean track, heading north.

That would mean a person could arrive in Christchurch, Queenstown or Dunedin and jump on a bike and either head north, south or inland, and have a number of choices of which way to go.

Mark said the trail was designed to “spread the load” out of the busy tourist towns and into the wider Central Otago community.

“It’s not just a tourism initiative but about creating a new outdoor lifestyle experience…for visitors and for locals.”

It would also give some of the smaller towns in the district an added boost, and create new opportunities for everyone, he said.

Central Otago Queenstown Trail Network Trust chairman Stephen Jeffery was one of the original drivers of the project, involved with the Roxburgh Gorge Trail linking Alexandra and the Teviot Valley.

The Central Otago District Councillor, and former orchardist, said initially it was all about economic growth and just wanting to see a bit more vibrancy in his community.

Now with both the Roxburgh Gorge and Clutha Gold trails providing more new visitors to outlying towns such as Ettrick, Beaumont, Millers Flat, and Lawrence, local businesses were beginning to thrive again.
