Be Who You Are Meant To Be

Loralei Matisse, RScP

Recently, I caught up with a friend of mine. Her life has been one of struggle over the years, and yet when she approached, I saw a definite change. She smiled big. Her walk more confident. She felt bright, full of energy. Curiosity had me. I wanted to know more.

When I asked, she told me, ‘I’ve got so much good happening all around me. New possibilities in my life that will bring me experiences so different than my life has been. I’m so excited but I question if I’m enough. Will I have the courage and strength to become someone I’ve always wanted to be? To finally have the life I’ve always wanted?' As she questioned, I watched the excitement drain out of her and her radiant energy become shadowed in doubt.

Her life is changing dramatically – with a surgery correcting her vision giving her new sight and, really a new way of living. She’ll be able to drive. See people, details like blades of grass, enjoy colors like she’s never seen in 20+ years. She’s asked for this miracle, this life. In her prayers. In her meditation. In her journaling.

However, even in the excitement and wonder, she’s fearful of losing the identity of who she’s believed herself to be and releasing who she’s been. She’s walking into the unknown. A new frontier. A very scary place to be. Why would my friend doubt … why do any of us doubt … who we are meant to be? ...

Third Thursday Spiritual Forum

How Anxiety Sabotages Faith

Thursday, April 18; 7:00 - 8:30 pm
Center for Spiritual Living  Boulder Valley

When all is going well, it is relatively easy for the spiritually-committed person to feel the Sacred within and to bring love and joy into the world. When all is not so harmonious and one is riddled with anxiety and doubt, it is relatively hard to contact the Sacred or feel the flow of grace from inside into the world, and one’s faith can be shaken to the core. It appears inevitable that such periods of darkness will visit everyone, as attested by our experience and by the testimony of all the great spiritual leaders and mystics throughout history. In this presentation, Rev. Bill Selby will lay the neuroscientific grounds for how anxiety can overwhelm one, as the frightened reptilian brain continuously assails the higher consciousness and drowns out the sacred whispering of the soul. He will give us tools and thought patterns to help break the destructiveness of anxious fear, on both a personal level and on the analogous level of spiritual communities. Refreshments and opportunity for interaction with Bill and other attendees will follow the presentation.

Presenter Biography.Rev. Bill Selby, A.A., B.S., M.S., M. Div., is an Ordained United Methodist Minister who has led both small and large churches in Indiana, Wyoming, and Colorado from 1974 to 1995. In 1995, Bill was appointed to the Rocky Mountain Conference Extension Ministry and created The Center For Pastoral Effectiveness of the Rockies to minister to ministers. The Center, based on Family Systems Theory, is a six-retreat program spread over eighteen months, helping to maintain ministers in ministry with over 900 clergy alumni. He works as consultant, professional coach, and seminar leader for churches, non-profit organizations, and corporate companies, empowering leadership to be less reactive to the stress, anxiety and doubt in their organizations and become more self-differentiated, non-anxious leaders. Bill and his family make their home in Highlands Ranch, Colorado. Speaker info: http://www.pastoraleffectiveness.org

Earth Day, April 22, is here!

Barbara Weirich, CSLBV member

Spring is here and everything is budding out. It’s so easy to appreciate Mother Earth in the springtime. I like to take some time each day to enjoy something nature has to offer – birds chirping, a sunset or sunrise, our beautiful snow covered mountains, our sweet dog Gabby and many other things. In addition to appreciating nature and all the earth has to offer, it’s also a good time to consider climate change. Here are some environmental facts. Globally we produce about 310 million tons of plastic each year which is about 83 pounds per person. The energy usage of the average American emits about 5 tons of CO2. Animal agriculture is one of the largest contributors to climate change. But there are also many “good news” stories of people working to help the environment and there are plenty of actions we can take. Here are a few.
  • Eliminate plastic bags when shopping.
  • Go meatless and dairyless one or two days a week. Click for recipes
  • Grow a garden or participate in a community garden.
  • Have a home energy audit.
  • Contact your representatives supporting the Green New Deal and The Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act if you do support them. Click here for more info.
  • Donate or volunteer for an environmental organization.
  • Support the education of girls worldwide.
Suggested reading and viewing if you would like to learn more:
  • Drawdown by Paul Hawken
  • An Inconvenient Sequel – Truth to Power by Al Gore (book or dvd)
  • Cradle to CradleRemaking the Way We Make Things by William McDonough and Michael Braungart
Love the earth! Enjoy the earth! Save the earth!

The Hero's Journey in Everyday Life

A Workshop on Saturday, May 4
9:00 am to 1:00 pm
At the Center for Spiritual Living Boulder Valley

The Hero’s Journey described by Joseph Campbell requires individuals to accept the call to adventure, cross the threshold of the known into the unknown, find one’s mentors and allies, face foes and challenges, go through a transformation and ultimately befriend their dragons.

Using art, film, journaling, self-reflection and discussion this half day workshop will give participants the opportunity to explore their lives through Campbell’s framework. As we accepted the call to our many journeys in life: marriage, parenthood, being an older adult, entering a profession or school, dealing with
health issues, becoming a caregiver, getting divorced; we will venture through the stages of the Hero’s Journey and consider a new narrative for our lives. Participants will gain insight, inspiration, and courage as they awaken and bring forth their inner hero. For more info, click here.

Facilitator: JoAnn Burton, CPRP, is an author and trainer, and has presented numerous workshops for 20 years, specializing in the Hero’s Journey curriculum.

Cost: $40

Our Dearest Leanne Needs Your Help

You can still contribute to her healing journey!

Leanne Goff, a member of CSL Boulder Valley, will be traveling to Germany once a month for the next two years, to receive a promising immunotherapy for cancer that is not available in the United States. The German bio-genetic engineers who have developed this technology are actually tailoring immunotherapy to directly correlate with the mutations within the DNA of the patient’s own cancer cells. The scientists are using this form of treatment for many types of cancer and most recently for Glioblastoma, the most aggressive of brain cancers which Leanne has contracted. The treatment available in Germany has the potential to save Leanne's life and in doing so will bring this treatment further into the light for U.S. scientists who are looking to bring the trial into official status with the FDA. Leanne's infectious joy and positivism buoy and support us all with her enthusiasm and grace in this great pilgrimage.

You can still help defray the expenses that Leanne is incurring in her brave battle with cancer. If you have not yet had a chance to donate to Neuro Ananda, click here to go to their website, www.neuroananda.org Neuro Ananda is a 501c3 nonprofit corporation, making your contributions tax deductible donations. If you prefer to send in a check, a mailing address for Neuro Ananda is given at the site. Leanne founded Neuro Ananda, and all contributions go directly to her. Leanne is incredibly grateful for all of the support, financial, spiritual and otherwise, for her amazing healing journey!

Goodsearch and Goodshop

Raising money for CSLBV the easy way

Goodsearch

Every time you use Goodsearch for your internet searches, they make a donation to your favorite cause. You’ll set up an account with them (your Goodshop account works here) and select CSL Boulder Valley so they know who to send the money to. Use the search box on their homepage or download a Good To-Go browser add-on to search the Internet just like you normally would. Where does the money come from? Search engines make most of their money from their advertisers.  Goodsearch has patented a way to track and direct these search-generated proceeds to causes. In other words, a portion of advertiser dollars (and not your own!) earned as a result of your search, are now passed along to the organization you've chosen to support. To sign up:

Goodshop

Goodshop is an online shopping mall that donates a percent of your purchases to your selected cause. You’ll set up an account with Goodshop, which keeps track of the amount raised and the cause you want it to go to. To set up an account or to log in, click here. Once you’re in, browse Goodshop for your favorite store. Find a coupon code or deal, or click over to the store’s website from Goodshop and shop as you normally would. Copy the code on the pop-up, and paste the code at checkout. It doesn’t cost anything extra. Where does the money come from? The online stores pay a referral fee to Goodshop. They give half of the fee as a donation to your selected cause.
