Letter from the President

Time flies and here we are already into April, where did “The Season” go? As you know VASI is busiest during the Winter months. Oh, we are vigilant and “On Patrol” all year, but most of our events occur when the majority of our members are “In Town”!

VASI events started in September with a program on Owner Operator Maintenance, Sheriff's Helicopter Unit in October and VASI Picnic, Sarasota Tower in November, Airport Open House in December, remember the “Free Hot Dogs”! Started 2019 with The Aging Pilot in January,  ADS-B in February and VASI Picnic, G.E. Engines and VASI Picnic in March, and this month Cuba and Caribbean Flying! It's been quite a year for programs. Thanks to all who helped put together these events.

Your Board approved the continuation of our scholarship program of two $500 scholarships. These to be awarded in early May. Although not major scholarships, they are much appreciated. The Scholarship Councilor at Venice High School tells me that the fact a student is recognized is worth as much as the money!

As announced at last month's meeting, starting in May and continuing through August, we will meet in conjunction with local EAA chapter 1285. This to combine our efforts to provide programs for the reduced number of members available during these months. Dennis King EAA Local President and I came up with this plan, and we think it will be beneficial to both groups. After all, many of you belong to both groups, so it makes sense to combine our efforts. Meeting notices will be sent out providing date, time and location. As a aside, most EAA meetings are held in the former Officers Club for Venice Army Airfield! This building is located in the trailer park owned by the airport and functions as their community center. As Dennis says “Cool”!

Not so “Cool” is the Venice political scene for the upcoming elections. This promises to have several hotly contested campaigns. Mayor and two council seats are open this Fall. Already groups are forming to propose candidates. One group of former “Anti-Airport” activists have held interviews for candidates. Their main agenda appears to be “No Growth” which will appeal to many and get traction in this election. But, don't forget these same people are the ones calling in noise complaints daily, and the ones that years ago rallied to close the airport! VASI must and will remain vigilant! VASI has planned our “Candidates Forum” for Oct 16 next Fall to hear the positions of all the candidates.

I would like to thank all who attended the Public Meeting for the new Airport Admin Building.  The Airport Management Team, led by Airport Director Mark Cervasio, gave the presentation and aproximately 40 attended of which at least 30 were VASI members! Great support for the airport management team, and a notice to all that VASI is a powerful voice supporting the airport and General Aviation. Nice job!

All in all, I think VASI has had a pretty good year! Time to get crackin' on next Fall's schedule! Remember, spread the word, KVNC is the Best GA airport in Florida!
