Hi IBC family, I'm Ryan Sanders, the Pastor of Engagement. I'm passionate about connecting people with community here at Irving Bible Church.

Saturday night, my family and I finally saw Hamilton. We had been waiting a long time to see it, and we loved it. If you’re not familiar, Hamilton is the biggest Broadway hit in decades. It’s about Alexander Hamilton (yes, that one) and it casts him as an ambitious, high-energy iconoclast whose life motto seems to be “Go for it!” Even in situations when he probably should do otherwise, Hamilton decides to go for it. His character-defining song comes at the very beginning of the show when Hamilton declares, “I am not throwing away my shot!”

So why am I telling you about my Saturday night and a dead guy? Because it’s Holy Week which means it’s our opportunity to go for it

This week, IBC will host guests, neighbors, Chreasters, visiting family members, skeptics, pilgrims, sinners, and saints. Our doors will welcome people from other faiths, people from other nations, people of all ages, and people with no clue how much Jesus loves them. More people will step onto our campus in the next four days than any week of the year.

This is our shot.

It’s our opportunity to welcome people, serve people, and point people to the risen savior. It’s our opportunity to pique interest, build trust, and debunk Christian stereotypes. It’s our opportunity to put our best foot forward.

So here are four practical ways you can go for it this week.
  1. Make Room. Hospitable people make room for others. They wave in, scoot over, and open up. You can make room for others in the parking lot by parking far from the building, in the worship center by moving to the center, and in your conversations before or after the worship service.
  2. Serve. When Easter Sunday ends, IBCers will have logged more than 2,000 total volunteer hours. It is a massive undertaking. And there is still room to join the team. If you can serve at the North Irving Easter Festival on Saturday, or if you can smile and hold open a door on Sunday, please join us! Just email us.
  3. Invite. There are people you know who will be more open to an invitation to church this Sunday than any other Sunday of the year. Don’t miss your shot to bring them with you! Feel free to employ our social media resources.
  4. Pray. Holy Week is the church’s super bowl because it celebrates a supernatural event. All our friendliest welcomes and fabulous festivals don’t matter at all if they don’t point to Jesus. So pray for the Holy Spirit to move in hearts all week.
Together, let’s follow Hamilton’s lead. Holy Week is here. Let’s not throw away our shot.

It's easy to share!
