Telling the Old, Old Story:
Depictions of the Descent from the Cross

Over the centuries painters have treated religious stories in many different ways.

This lecture, by Richard Whincop, explores the great variety of approaches that artists have used to depict the scene of Jesus' body being removed from the Cross and carried to his tomb, analysing and comparing works from Rogier van der Weyden to Rembrandt and on to Beckmann in the Twentieth century.

It considers what the manner of the depiction says about the artists' views on art, and their outlooks on spiritual experience – and asks whether these paintings can still speak to us today.

The Normans – Conquest and Legacy

It is 950 years since the Normans invaded England. The roughest of company, they came not to civilise, but to seize. A mere eleven men in Duke William’s inner circle enjoyed an unprecedented bonanza, receiving almost half the land of the conquered kingdom. There followed an orgy of building in what was described as ‘a new manner’ – castles, churches, monasteries and cathedrals – that all but effaced the fabric of Saxon England. It was their way of showing us who was in charge.

In describing the mass of post-Conquest masonry, the lecturer, Rupert Willoughby, focuses on individuals, like the deeply unpleasant Baldwin de Redvers, lord of the Isle of Wight, where his legacy endures. He offers an insight into their lives – and the disgusting details of William the Conqueror’s funeral.

CHURCH RECORDING
'RECORDING THE PAST FOR THE FUTURE'



NEEDED: A VOLUNTEER TO BE GROUP LEADER OF OUR CHURCH RECORDING GROUP

The contents of churches throughout the United Kingdom are being recorded for future generations by the church recording (CR) volunteers in The Arts Society.

The members of the combined Pewsey Vale and Devizes AS's  CR group are currently recording St. Peter's Church, Charlton St. Peter.  

The role of Group Leader does not require someone who is a Recorder nor, indeed, an expert in churches but It could be helpful to have a general interest in churches. Currently the Group meets once a month and in-between group meetings individuals, alone or in small groups, do their recording. Their work is typed up and compiled together with photographs into a record.  A bound copy is given to the church, and a further four copies, some now in digital format, go to the V&A Art Library, the ChurchCare Library, Historic England and the County Records Office.

Training is available plus full support from the Wessex CR Area representative and the CR Team at headquarters.

Henry Moore: The Helmet Heads

The Wallace Collection, London

6 March – 23 June 2019

The first major exhibition to explore the great twentieth century British sculptor's fascination with armour.

Presented in collaboration with the Henry Moore Foundation, the exhibition comprises over sixty sketches, drawings, maquettes and full-sized sculptures in plaster, lead and bronze, juxtaposed with the Renaissance armour that inspired them.

PIERRE BONNARD: THE COLOUR OF MEMORY

Tate Modern, London - until 6th May 2019

This is the first major exhibition of Pierre Bonnard's work in the UK since the much-loved show at the Tate 20 years ago.  It will allow new generations to discover Donnard's unconventional use of colour, while surprising those who think they already know him.

The exhibition concentrates on Bonnard's work from 1912, when colour became a dominant concern, until his death in 1947.  It presents landscapes and intimate domestic scenes which capture moments in time - where someone has just left the room, a meal has just finished, a moment lost in the view from the window, or a stolen look at a partner.

VAN GOGH AND BRITAIN

TATE BRITAIN, LONDON - UNTIL 11TH AUGUST

This major exhibition brings together 45 works by Vincent van Gogh to reveal how he was inspired by Britain and how he inspired British Artists.

Van Gogh lived in England as a young man for several crucial years.  He walked the streets alone, dreaming of the future. He fell in love with British culture, especially the novels of Charles Dickens and George Eliot.

The exhibition also looks at British artists who were inspired by Van Gogh, including Francis Bacon, David Bomberg, and the young Camden Town painters.  It shows how his vision set British artists on the road to modern art.

The Renaissance Nude

Trace the development of the nude through some of the great masters of the Renaissance. Bringing together works by artists such as Titian, Raphael, Michelangelo, Leonardo, Dürer and Cranach, we shed light on a visual tradition at its most vital moment.

This spectacular exhibition explores these important changes in a selection of exquisite works. From full-scale paintings to jewel-like miniatures, bronze statuettes to anatomical studies, they contrast idealised beauty with the ageing body, and public images with more intimate, private works.

Painting Childhood: From Holbein to Freud

Compton Verney

Compton Verney celebrates children in art, bringing together some of the most iconic paintings of children produced over the past 500 years.

Featuring stunning portraits, amusing genre scenes and touching 'fancy' pictures, the exhibition will feature 60 works from collections across the UK, and will explore the specific challenges posted by painting children: from capturing the fleeting moments of youth to encouraging young subjects to sit still.
