White wins Alumni Distinguished Undergraduate Teaching Award
Ten faculty members and advisers from the Trinity College of Arts & Sciences, including Leonard White, PhD, were honored at a reception April 11 in Perkins Library. The awards are given annually by the dean’s office in recognition of exceptionally strong teachers working across the college. This year, Trinity’s Arts & Sciences Council led the nomination and selection process for several categories. One notable exception, White's alumni teaching award, was decided by a committee of students. Read more.

Bukhari-Parlakturk receives Doris Duke award to retain clinicians
Promising young faculty face a dilemma as they enter academic medicine. Having invested years in medicine, graduate degrees, residency, or specialty training, many are ready to start families; others have relatives who need medical care. At the same time they face incredible pressure to establish themselves professionally and build reputations. This pressure is especially strong for clinician-scientists, who perform research and see patients. As a result, many new faculty delay their families further, put their research or clinical interests on hold, or become burned out from overwork.  Read more.

This week: Early morning grand rounds, narrative medicine, portrait photoshoots, and more
This week Grand Rounds returns to its 8 a.m. Duke North roots for a week as Christa Swisher, MD, discusses women in neurology. Wednesday will also feature Sneha Mantri, MD, leading a workshop in narrative medicine and free “headshot” photo session open to all clinical faculty and APPs. Other events include multiple neurobiology seminars, and grand rounds for pallaitive care and psychiatry.

Staff Spotlight
Stuart Sundseth
As a research technician within the lab of Carol Colton, PhD, Stuart Sundseth is following in the footsteps of his father, who worked with Allen Roses, MD, to run clinical trials on Alzheimer’s disease, and his mother, a biochemist specializing in grant-writing. For this week’s “Staff Spotlight” interview, Sundseth talks to us about his work performing experiments, analyzing data, and helping undergraduate students overlaps and differs from the work of his parents. He also discusses why he enjoys the ever-changing nature of his work and enjoying skiing and cooking in his spare time. Read more.
