PRESS RELEASE
Overwhelming Palestinian majority wants presidential and parliamentary elections
Large majority rejects land swaps, Israeli security control or customs union in future state
Social Security deemed important by majority of Palestinians
86.9% of Palestinians think holding presidential elections is important, while 82.8% say it is important to hold parliamentary elections. These are the findings of an opinion poll conducted by the Jerusalem Media and Communication Center (JMCC), in partnership with the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES).
Despite the public resistance towards the Social Security Law, the poll shows an overwhelming majority of 87.6% of Palestinians, who in general find it important for the government to provide social security.
When it comes to prospects of a future peace agreement large parts of the Palestinian public say they would not accept land swaps with Israel (78.4%), Israeli security control (83.9%) or a customs union (72.1%).
Jerusalem Media and Communication Center (JMCC), in partnership with the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) regularly conduct public opinion polls that focus on recent socio-political developments in the occupied Palestinian territories and include trend questions to highlight long-term developments. The current poll (No. 94) was conducted late March in both the West Bank and the Gaza Strip with a randomly selected sample of 1200 Palestinians over the age of 18 in face-to-face interviews.
Please find the full results of the poll attached.
