Kneemail from Saint James Church

April 10, AD 2019

FROM THE RECTOR:
Dear parishioners & friends of St James’,

Palm Sunday commemorates the entry of the Lord into Jerusalem. The palm procession with which the liturgy begins enacts that entry into Jerusalem by the Lord, where those standing by waved palms and shouted “Hosanna!” We make the Church our Jerusalem for the coming week.  We are carefully watching the weather, and in case of inclement weather, the entire liturgy will be inside the church.

The liturgy of the palms is always slightly chaotic and breathes a certain excitement. The hymns are spirited and uplifting.  The Mass that immediately follows the liturgy of the palms is of a very different character. It is a Mass of the Passion, and so it prepares us for the events that we shall be commemorating in the days ahead.

Yours with every blessing,

Rev. Douglas Anderson, Rector

At 11:50, before Stations, Doris Davis will offer three brief piano pieces by Johann Sebastian Bach which evoke the emotion of Christ’s Passion.
  • Completed in 1722, Bach’s Fugue XVI in G minor from Book I, contains four voices, complicated by the frequent crossing of theme and countersubject.  With the inscription of “In Jesus’ Name,” it offers a mournful beauty.
  • The second movement of the Italian Concerto, the Andante, contains Bach’s markings of “molto espressivo,” requiring an expressive performance.  The repeated motif of two notes in the bass suggests a gravity of emotion as does the key signature of D minor, the relative minor of the joyous and celebratory first and third movements.
  • Siloti’s transcription of Bach’s Organ Prelude written in G minor captures the beauty and grandeur of the original.  Marked “Adagio, religioso,” the prelude moves from a quiet opening to a conclusion of great strength.

BY WAY OF REMINDER:  It is our custom to send out reminders to those serving the following Sunday on three occasions: Tuesdays (by email), Wednesdays (via the Knee Mail), then then again on Thursdays (by email, with the Bulletin).  It helps the Office to know of any conflicts sooner rather than later!
