Juliet Paulson: Princeton US-China Coalition

Juliet Paulson, a CFS student majoring in History, Anthropology, and Asian Languages and Literatures, was nominated as a delegate at the 2019 Princeton U.S.-China Coalition's Global Governance Forum. Uniting the most promising student leaders across the world on Princeton's campus, PUCC seeks to create a transnational coalition of student leaders poised to face the issues at the forefront of US-China policy.

Reflecting on this experience, Juliet said, “Attending the Princeton U.S.-China Coalition's Global Governance Forum gave me the opportunity to meet other students from across the world who are equally concerned about recent trends in the relationship between the U.S. and China. I was happy to learn from both my peers and the guest speakers, and to engage in the type of cross-cultural dialogues that I hope will help us create a better future for both nations.”

Course Highlight

This semester, students have the opportunity to take two classes taught by Flagship Program director Professor Ning Ma: “Introduction to Classical Chinese Language and Culture” and “Martial Arts in Chinese Literature and Film.” The Classical Chinese course focuses on classical texts and poetry, allowing students to gain a new awareness of the beauty and distinctiveness of the Chinese language through reading and recitation. The course will culminate in a performance project, “The Classical Chinese Heritage: A Cross-Cultural Journey,” funded by CLA’s Teaching Innovation Grant.

The course “Martial Arts in Chinese Literature and Film” focuses on exploring martial arts as a cultural and literary motif. The course will build conversation around the Daoist and Confucian philosophies underlying martial arts, and the social commentary martial arts literature provides across different time periods. Although the class itself will be taught using literature and film in translation, a 1-credit online course is offered for students of sufficient Chinese proficiency using the original materials.
