Welcome Spring

Let's shake off those winter blues. The Recreation & Culture department at the City of Niagara Falls is gearing up for the nice weather with many fun upcoming events. From tree planting to bike rides to BBQ, there is a little something for everyone.

Arbour Day Tree Planting
On Thursday, April 25 from 2-4PM, the Park in the City Committee will celebrate Arbour Day with various students and local volunteers who will help to plant 60 native trees at Chippawa Lions Park (3970 Welland Street). The location of this year's tree planting chosen as it was recently devastated by the Emerald Ash Borer. Thank you to the Rotary Club of Niagara Falls Sunrise, Niagara Peninsula Energy Inc., and Niagara Casinos for contributing to this event. If you are interested in volunteering, please call 905-356-7521 ext 3341, or email jguarasci@niagarafalls.ca for complete details. This event is rain or shine.
13th Annual Ride of Silence
The Park in the City Committee will host their 13th Annual Ride of Silence on Wednesday, May 15 at 7PM at Firemen's Park (2275 Dorchester Road). Thank you to Inception Cyclery and St. John Ambulance for providing complimentary support, and to the SCVFA and Amici Per La Vita Cycling Club for hosting and helping organize the event.
This annual, free bicycle ride event encourages all residents to take part and ride in honour of severely injured and fallen cyclists. You don't have to be a serious cyclist to participate and all ages are welcome. You just need a safe bike and helmet, and to be comfortable riding along the roadways within our City. Starting at 7PM, the ride is a slow, procession-style, approximately 10 km ride, with all cyclists following the rules of the road. New for 2019, there will also be a 5 km family fun route along the Haulage Trail and Solar Subdivision, which is suitable for beginner riders and families with children. Come early for a free bicycle check compliments of Inception Cyclery, starting at 6:15PM. There is no registration required for the event.
Sports Wall of Fame
2019 Nominations
The Sports Wall of Fame Committee is seeking nominations for their 2019 induction. Potential nominees should be teams or individuals whose athletic abilities have brought fame to themselves and their community, or individuals whose interest in and work for sport has resulted in a climate which benefited athletes and athletics. Nominations are due Friday, May 3. For more information, or to download a nomination form, visit: niagarafalls.ca/SWOF.
Canada Day Celebration
Volunteers Needed
Canada Day in Niagara Falls has been a tradition in our beautiful City for over 30 years. This annual event brings our entire community together, for residents and visitors to enjoy and share our special bond of living in one of the greatest countries in the world and celebrating our freedom, values, and diversity.
Each year more than 100 volunteers help welcome thousands of guests to take part in the free festivities organized by the Niagara Falls Canada Day Planning Team. Volunteering is a great way to build experience, get involved in your community, meet new people, and show your Canadian pride. Volunteers must be at least 12 years old, enjoy working with the public, and be able to commit to a minimum of four hours of volunteer work. For more information and to sign-up to volunteer, visit: niagarafalls.ca/canadaday.
The first volunteer meeting will be held on Monday, May 13 at 3:30 PM at the MacBain Community Centre (7150 Montrose Road). Anyone interested in helping out can attend!
Annual Tree Seedling Sale
The Park in the City Committee encourages local residents, businesses, and schools to plant native trees to help restore health to our urban environment. As part of the promotion, the Committee sells native seedlings for only $5 each. Over the last seven years, over 3,500 seedlings have been sold. The next tree seedling sale will take place on Saturday, April 27 from 9AM to 12PM at the MacBain Community Centre (7150 Montrose Road). Tree species for sale this year include: Eastern Hemlock, White Pine, Red Oak, Tulip, and Bitternut Hickory.
Tree seedlings are sold on a first-come, first-served basis. Residents can pre-order seedlings with payment at either the MacBain Centre or Gale Centre until April 24th. Only orders of 5 seedlings to 25 seedlings are eligible for pre-order. Individual seedlings can be purchased on the event day with cash only. Quantities are limited, so don't wait. For more information, call 905-356-7521 ext 3341.
FREE Community BBQ
The Mayor's Youth Advisory Committee (MYAC) is kicking off Mental Health Week with a fun, free community BBQ on Sunday, May 5 from 12-4PM at the Niagara Falls History Museum (5810 Ferry Street). This mental health awareness event is sponsored by Enbridge, and will feature wellness booths, live music by local youth, yoga and meditation sessions, and children's activities. Everyone is eligible for a free BBQ item, cooked and served by the team from Billy Bones BBQ, with the completion of a participation passport! All residents are welcome to attend.
Community Clean Sweep
The Community Clean Sweep Day event brings volunteers together who collectively help to clean our City of debris. Twice each year, volunteers scatter throughout parks, trails, walkways, and main street boulevards with recycling and garbage bags, collecting litter. The next Community Clean Sweep event will take place on Saturday, May 11 at 9AM. Volunteers are asked to register online at niagarafalls.ca/cleansweep to participate. The Clean Sweep event will start at Mick & Angelo's Kitchen + Bar parking lot (corner of Montrose Road and Lundy's Lane) starting at 9 AM. Volunteers can collect their cleaning supplies and instructions at the start of the event. Afterwards, lunch will be provided back at Mick & Angelo's restaurant. This event will take place rain or shine.
Niagara's Premier Garage Sale
The 4th Annual Garage Sale at the Gale will be taking place on Saturday, June 22 from 8AM to 12PM. This event takes place rain or shine in the parking lot of the Gale Centre (5152 Thorold Stone Road). Last year, over 80 vendors were on-site selling a wide variety of goods. All proceeds raised from vendor registrations will benefit the City's Activity Subsidy Fund. The Activity Subsidy Fund aids many families in Niagara Falls by subsidizing the cost of recreation activities. Anyone interested in being a vendor this year can fill out a registration form at the MacBain Community Centre until Friday, June 7. Full details can be found online at  niagarafalls.ca/garagesale.
