Lineup

Previously on the Joy of Coding newsletter we promised you we'd update you on the final spots of our lineup. So without further ado lets introduce two of them:

Jason Scott is the Free-Range Archivist and Software Curator at the Internet Archive (also known as the Wayback Machine) in San Francisco, California, USA.  He is one of the organizers of The Emularity, an in-browser framework for playing emulators that the Archive uses to provide tens of thousands of programs to users. He is also the founder of TEXTFILES.COM, a 20-year project of assembling textfiles from the dial-up era, and a co-founder of ARCHIVE TEAM, a volunteer coalition of programmers and loudmouths who mirror websites before self-imposed destruction.

Professor Kenneth B. McAlpine is an award-winning composer, musician, and technologist. He currently works at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, The University of Melbourne as an Enterprise Fellow in Interactive Composition.

After completing a piano diploma with the London College of Music and a bachelor’s degree in mathematics, he completed a PhD in algorithmic music composition at the University of Glasgow, bringing together his love of music, maths and technology, and has continued to work at that interesting point where different disciplines collide: he has developed interactive soundtracks for live theatre, film and video game; produced bagpipe music for the Beijing Olympics; created a music-streaming app for newborn babies and young children for the Scottish Government and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, and built a unique digital harpsichord exhibit for the National Trust in London.

Outside of work Kenny can generally be found rolling around hills on a mountain bike with a GoPro strapped to his handlebars, huffing his way round a marathon course with a GoPro strapped to his chest, or baking bread. Normally without the GoPro.

Talk Abstract
Coding the future Coders
Angie Jones

"The joy of coding is something that’s difficult to explain. Coding is tedious, nerve-wrecking, and can be downright intimidating. Yet it’s exhilarating, rewarding, and has the ability to change the world as we know it. This joy that we have for tech is something that we can gift to others!

As someone who didn’t know a single computer programmer growing up, software engineering is not something that I knew existed as a possible career path. I went to college clueless about what I wanted to do with my life and only took a computer programming course by chance. I immediately fell in love with coding and have been in love ever since.

As a seasoned professional, I often think about young kids who are like me. Do they know this joy exists? What if they don’t stumble into programming as I did? Will they never know this joy that we get to experience daily?

In this talk, I’ll share how I explored opportunities to gift the joy of coding to others; I’ll share ways that I give back with the limited amount of spare time that I do have; and I’ll share techniques on how to expose kids to complex topics such as machine learning, mobile app development, game design, and web animation with hands-on exercises."
